Ajilon Technology Aerospace is looking for a Space Environment Effects Engineer E3 for an opportunity at the European Space Agency in the Netherlands Ajilon Technology Aerospace is a specialized Engineering consultancy with more than 30 years experience providing aerospace Engineers to our key partners in The Netherlands. Ajilon is a longstanding business partner of the European Space Agency ESA, with more than 100 employees recruited from across Europe currently supporting ESAs activities. General tasks to be performed The section supports ESA and European space mission development with investigations of space environments and their effects on space systems. This involves several activities Application of many different models and software packages to analyse the effects that space environments e.g. chargedparticle radiation, plasmas, micrometeoroids space debris, atomic oxygen, geomagnetism may have on ESA missions. Development, adaptation, use and interpretation of the various models and tools and software development of associated graphical and other utilities, including WWW applications. Inorbit measurements of environmental parameters energetic particles, micro particles, plasmas are used to investigate local spacecraft conditions and to develop models of these environments for use in future mission planning. Tasks will contribute to the analysis of some of these data, derive relevant parameters to compare with existing models for validation, and ultimately lead to improvement of the models. Tasks will also involve contributions to the design, development, testing and calibration of the equipment for in orbit measurements. Natural energetic particles in space interact with components, detectors, astronauts, etc. causing a variety of problems. The GEANT4 radiation transport toolkit is used for specific space problems, including dose, SEE, and interactions of solar and galactic particles with detectors, etc. Micro particle environments are analysed with ESABASE2Debris. Spacecraft plasma interactions are analysed with SPIS, as well as heritage tools. Atmospheric environments are studied with the Mars climate databases and circulation models GCM, including the European Martian Climate Database and GCM. Spenvis is used as a generalpurpose resource for space environments and effects analyses. Specific tasks to be performed The contractor tasks will also contribute to development of space weather systems, including system definition and reviews, model development, testing of developed methods and establishment services. Contributions are also expected to the definition of required space weather hardware e.g. instrumentation and software developments, and subsequently assisting in the monitoring of industrial contracts. Contributions to the preparation of ECSS engineering standards shall be made ECSSE1004, ECSSE1012, ECSSE20, etc.. Support the section with maintenance of computational infrastructure for providing space environments and effects analysis support including web site upgrade and updating, software testing, software implementation and maintenance. Reviews of contractor documents in this domain and in areas where environmental effects may have an impact shall be undertaken. The Contractor will support the activities of technology research and development contracts regarding the above areas, including direct interfaces with the contractors, participate in progress meetings and reviews, as requested, and provide appropriate feedback on the progress and discussions. When supporting projects, interfacing may include communication with the project contractor companies or partner organizations, participation in progress meetings and reviews, as requested by project work, and provision of appropriate feedback on the achieved progress and discussions. As part of the tasks, authoritative, highquality reporting on analyses shall be undertaken. Presentations to project staff shall be undertaken. Good quality control of analyses is essential. Development work shall be fully documented. In some cases contributions to scientific and technical papers will be made. To successfully perform the above mentioned tasks, the following background experience is required As per Job Class in physics, applied physics, engineering with a physics andor computing content, computing with good physics ability, or equivalent experience. Advanced knowledge is required in computer programming in C and Java under Unix. Use of advanced software tools specifically including the Geant4 MonteCarlo toolkit and WWW technologies for science and engineering of interactions of radiation with matter and systems is required. Knowledge of Monte Carlo radiation transport or particleincell plasma simulation. Knowledge of the space radiation environment and its effects, and of detection techniques, is highly desirable. Very good verbal and written communication skills are required. About ESAESTEC The European Space Agency ESA has sites in several European countries. The European Space Research and Technology Centre ESTEC is the largest site and the technical heart of ESA. This nursery of European space activities is located in Noordwijk, Netherlands. At ESTEC, about 2500 engineers, technicians and scientists work handson with mission design, spacecraft and space technology. Almost all ESA projects except launchers are managed from ESTEC. In Noordwijk, people work on science missions, manned space missions, Earth observation, telecommunications and navigation satellites. ESTEC provides extensive testing facilities to verify the proper operation of spacecraft, such as the Large Space Simulator LSS, acoustic and electromagnetic testing bays, multiaxis vibration tables and the ESA Propulsion Laboratory EPL.
