A Japanese firm says it will go ahead with plans to open a light-rail manufacturing facility in Los Angeles County, a month after threatening to pull out when talks with organized labor groups stalled. The county Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced Tuesday that Kinkisharyo International of Osaka will expand its existing facility in Palmdale to build rail cars.

Canadian dollar down, commodities lower as Japanese economy slips into recession

The Canadian dollar was lower Monday while the greenback gained strength in the wake of data showing Japan has fallen back into recession. The loonie was down 0.22 of a cent to 88.46 cents US as the world's third-largest economy contracted at a 1.6 per cent annual pace as housing and business investment dropped following a sales tax hike.
