The Commerce Department said Tuesday that new-home sales jumped 7.8 percent from January's level and were 24.8 percent higher than February 2014.

A key measure of the nation's housing market picked up speed in February as sales of previously-owned homes climbed 1.2 percent and ran ahead of last year's pace for the fifth straight month. That's according to the National Association of Realtors, which also said the median sales price of homes sold in February jumped at its fastest pace in 12 months, up 7.5 percent from a year ago to $202,600.

Slightly more Americans bought homes in February, but tight inventories, affordability problems and nasty winter weather point to sluggish sales in the coming few months. Sales of existing homes rose 1.2 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.88 million, a slight rebound after plunging in January yet still underperforming by historical standards, the National Association of Realtors said Monday.

More than 1,700 homes were sold in San Antonio during the month of February, yet another bellwether that the local housing market is getting stronger. Following a February housing boom, the San Antonio Board of Realtors recorded a 14 percent year-over-year increase in homes sold on the local organization's February 2015 Multiple Listing Service report.
