The successful candidate will join the Telecom Systems department. Airbus Defence Space studies the development of freespace optical communication systems. This involves laser communications for constellations or communications between satellites in low Earth orbit LEO or in geostationary orbit GEO and the ground. The applications planned for the latter cases are either oneway image telemetry or a high speed optical feeder several hundred Gbps and are twoway for broadband systems.The design of optical communication systems through the layers of atmosphere requires the knowledge of interference connected with atmospheric turbulence and also mastery of modulation, encryption, interlacing and synchronisation techniques in order to define the waveform best adapted to this type of transmission channel.The use of a variety of locations to maintain a high availability of the feeder link in spite of clouds requires using a fibre optic ground communications network to connect the different optic sites OGS On Ground Stations between them and with the users. Mastery of this network and the mechanism of transferring user data to the sites the handover is fundamental with regards to the cost of the entire optical system both from an operational minimising the handover time and commercial standpoint minimising the cost of a high speed ground network.In this context, you will join the optical communication systems team and in particular will be in charge of activities connected with modulation, encryption, interlacing and synchronisation techniques. Notably you will participate in the study of phase A of a high speed optical feeder system and will be responsible for the development of simulation tools or the use of simulation software dedicated to optical communication in order to evaluate the performance of optical transmission systems. This activity will be conducted in close relationship with the studies on atmospheric propagation ducts as well as the architecture of optical terminals.You will also be responsible for the following activities Contributing to the optimisation of optical communication architecture adapted to the atmospheric transmission duct according to the different missions planned, Evaluating their technical feasibility, their commercial viability and establishing comparative studies between the different options, Analysing constraints associated with the mechanism of the handover between the optical ground stations such as The positioning of the optical modem within the optic feeder ground network backbone, The optimisation of the interface between the backbone and the ground optical communication operators networks, The protocols of the network layer and the mechanisms of synchronisation, The cost of the ground network, by undertaking a comparative study between the proprietary backbone option or leasing from a ground optical communications operator. The idea is to define the architecture of the backbone and its cost at both the investment and operational levels. In the context of your activities, you will also be in charge of coordinating with the other Airbus DS teams involved with optical subjects satellite payload including photonic aspects, Earth observation, etc., as well as with external partners industrial and research laboratories, and notably with those involved with the Institute for Technological Research IRT. The engineer shall be employed within a leveraged allmission team, requiring the ability to switch rapidly between the multitude of roles e.g. project support, operations as required. The team support the full range of Comms Systems, from provision of support to new networks systems requirement and design, support of operational systems and those transitioning to operations status, and integration of legacy systems and their eventual replacement or decommissioning. The Comms Team performs the following activities Specification of customer networking needs for both LAN and WAN systems. Identification, extractioncollection, analysis consolidation of required data flows and specification of their characteristics. Assessment and definition of customer networking needs, plus analysis of existing infrastructure, specification of incremental and consolidated requirements on network infrastructure and systems. Specification of the customer network solution purpose and scope, highlevel functionalarchitectural design description and justification, detailed description of logical and physical design incl. redundancy behaviour. Operation and maintenance of current insitu networks on a 247 basis. Design, procurement and provision of dedicated operations voicevideo support systems. PROFILE Domain Skills Understanding and translating the business needs imposed by satellite ground systems environments or similar on networking, and the delivery of an associated network infrastructure along with functions and systems that are demonstrably viable and optimal to meet the stated requirements. 4.1.1 A demonstrable ability to analyse complex systems and present them in a comprehensible way to across other technical and managerial domains, with the specific ability to understand and communicate the relevant detail whilst maintaining focus on the overall systemwide aspects. 4.1.2 In depth experience in working within Project Management methodologies e.g. PrinceII, ideally with the Aerospace and Satellite business area. This should include knowledge of, and experience within the typlical full project lifecycle. Familiarity with appropriate industry standards e.g. ECSS should be detailed. 4.1.3 Experience with estimating and scheduling of multiple concurrent technical activities such that milestones and their likely achievement can be communicated. 4.1.4 Communication skills, in terms of experience in authoring technical and project documentation, and then being able to present it to a broad audience in English. 4.2 Development, Verification Maintenance Skills The engineer should demonstrate substantial recent direct experience with all aspects of network engineering within a comparable ideally satellite ground system communications system lifecycle. This should include for example identification of needs to deployment, operations and eventual decommissioning, and explain how those skill and experience would be directly relevant to meeting the requirements of the position. Supporting examples should be provided of recent experience where such skills have been deployed. This would include experience with mature change, configuration, capacity and problem management processes and systems. 4.2.1 Evidence of having worked with customers and stakeholders to extract and document business or crossdomain requirements, translating them into technical formal communications requirements for delivery within a project methodology. 4.2.2 Experience in the design and delivery of test plans such that deliverables can be validated against their likely ability to meet stated requirements. 4.3 Technology Skills 4.3.1 Internet Protocol network design, specification, documentation, testing, fault finding, and evolution. 4.3.2 Indepth knowledge of Cisco design methodologies, technologies and solutions. It will be beneficial if the incumbent holds current Cisco certifications or equivalent. 4.3.3 Familiarity with the trend to virtualise the above technologies and to recommend and justify when and why such approaches may be optimal, in addition to then deploying and supporting them. 4.3.4 Security skills associated with securing the communication system e.g. firewalls, intrusion detection and prevention, strong authentication. 4.3.5 Skills appropriate to associated domains e.g. computing clientserver, storage, dissemination. 4.3.6 Network performance monitoring in terms of both the network and the applicationssystems it supports in terms of supporting fault finding, documentation, performance tuning, capacity and configuration management etc. 4.4 Other Skills The official languages of EUMETSAT are English and French. The working language for the position is English and therefore the incumbent must be able to work effectively in this language. TASKS The incumbent will provide prime support to the Comms Team and will contribute to the requirements specification, design and development of Comms Systems, including the setting up of the related maintenance arrangements and processes. The tasks of the engineer will typically include but are not limited to Support to procurements of customerled network services and systems. Contribute to requirements specifications and statements of work. Participate in the evaluation of offers for network services and systems. Lead and implement the migration of existing operational programmespecific and shared facilities from their current legacy networks to the consolidated network infrastructure at EUMHQ. Upgrade the EUMETSAT networks in remote sites. Support and contribute to the development of network solutions for the MTG programme. Demonstrate how system architecture and design parameters and deliveries will meet requirements, through the effective design and implementation of testing and other verification processes and procedures. In the performance of these tasks, the engineer shall apply the EUMETSAT configuration and change control procedures. This is in addition to application of the relevant system engineering standards, quality management procedures and maintenance procedures. The engineer is expected generate and maintain documentation as an essential part of the tasks above. A vacancy has arisen for a Senior Hardware Engineer within the Communication Processors Group within Airbus Defence and Space in Stevenage. The Communication Processors group is responsible for the development of Digital Processors for telecommunications applications, working for a variety of customers usually external to Airbus. Whilst some products are bespoke designs, increasingly projects involve a tailoring of generic product solutions to a specific customer. The hardware team is responsible for the schematic design of the PCBs and component selection. The Senior Hardware Engineer is the Lead engineer acting as the focal point of contact for all customer facing technical needs, coordinating all aspects of engineering including the detailed design work. The Senior Hardware Engineer remains a key member of the project team during manufacture and test of the flight equipments, frequently interfacing directly with the customer. The successful candidate will be subject to UK National Security Clearance in order to undertake related work in accordance with business needs. Your main tasks and responsibilities will include Coordination of all technical elements of the project, starting from the customer specification. This includes overseeing the work carried out by detailed design engineers within the hardware team, performing component selection, simulations, analysis and schematic capture and working closely with neighbouring teams including ASICFPGA designers, Mechanical designers. It also involves coordinating inputs from specialists in other groups for example Radiation, EMC. Overseeing Manufacturing and Test of the equipments right through to delivery to the customer, working closely with the teams in those areas. Responding promptly to any anomolies or nonconformances that may occur, coordinating the appropriate analyses to give the customer confidence in the product. Generation and coordination of hardware design and test documentation, from equipment specifications, through PDR and CDR documentation including all associated analyses Worst Case Analyses, FMECAs to test reports and any NCRs RFDs RFWs IRBs NRBs. The successful candidate will be able to summarise clearly the technical information in order to present the key points to the project manager and to the customer. Providing regular progress reports to both line and project management, assisting with scheduling and costing of the project work. Inputs to bids for new projects, contributing technical sections and statements of compliance. Contribute to lessons learnt activities, process improvement and risk management. We are looking for candidates with the following skills and experience Educated to degree level in Electronics Electrical RF Aerospace Engineering, or related discipline. Experience of the complete Flight Hardware Design Cycle, from requirements capture, through schematic design, to experience of handson support to Manufacture and Test of Flight Units. Experience in coordinating the technical work of other engineers team size 5 to 40, including individuals located within the same team and in other parts of the organisation.
