Technology Development Engineering Support to the Future Missions

Aurora is an established supplier of skilled manpower to ESA and in particular at ESTEC and ESAC. Aurora has the opportunity to expand our support to ESA. Overview The work will be performed onsite at ESTEC within the Directorate of the Science SCI. The service is expected to deliver support to the Future Mission Preparation Office, which is responsible for the identification of technology requirements and the planning, coordination and management of the associated Technology Development Activities TDAs that are conducted by the European space industry. The candidate missions are regularly renewed, typically every 1 or 2 years through an open call for missions for the Cosmic Vision Programme and discussions with the Member States. The missions can address a large spectrum of technical competences. Examples are astrophysics observations in all wavelengths from GammaX rays to the far infrared, solar observatories, landers and mobile rovers for planetary or small body exploration, specific measurement techniques such as laser interferometry, aperture synthesis and spectroscopy, novel power systems using radioisotope nuclear decay, cryogenic coolers and cryostats, spacecraft subsystem specific developments such as high thrust propulsion engine and telecommunication elements. Main Service Tasks and Responsibilities will include Monitor the implementation of the activities contained in the Cosmic Visions Technology Plan, solicit the required inputs from the respective Interface Technical Officers, maintain the associated implementation database, produce implementation status reports and presentations Assist in the planning and coordination of the implementation of the activities contained in the Cosmic Visions Technology Plan Contribute to the implementation of TDAs Technology Development Activities Provide support to the development of the technologies required for the future ESA science missions as defined in the Cosmic Visions Programme TDAs documentation preparation Statement of Work, technical requirements and technical followup Provide support to the technology planning and the production of Technology Development Plans for future missions, themes and systems Assist in the coordination of technology developments and planning across ESA and with external parties Support future mission assessment and advanced studies in areas related to advanced technologies Participate in technical reviews and working groups. Specific qualification requirements Applicants should have a postgraduate Masters or PhD degree in Engineering or Physics. The nature of the support to be provided requires that the candidate possess a wide spectrum knowledge in engineering physics, with a natural inclination for understanding new technologies. The candidate should have several years of experience in the development of advanced technologies, preferably for space applications. Management experience with industrial contract exposure is an important asset. Knowledge of advanced optics, novel sensors and materials, power generation, thermal protection and cryogenics is required. The candidate will be expected to technically follow technology development contracts. The planning of the implementation of technology developments and the reporting on ongoing activities will form an important aspect. The candidate should have the demonstrated interest and ability of taking the initiative to get the job done when necessary. Effective communication skills are essential to the post in order to interface with colleagues within ESA and with external partners, in particular European industrial contractors. Experience working in the international and multicultural environment of ESA and knowledge of its working processes and procedures is considered an asset. Legal and Security Requirements All applicants must be legally allowed to work in The Netherlands Applicants are required to provide a copy of their passport and degree certificate. Aurora will validate the Degree with the issuing University and provide evidence to ESA. Prior to issuing a letter of employment the applicant shall provide to Aurora a recent official document declaring that they are of good conduct from the country where currently resident. Location The work will be performed at the European Space Technology and Research Centre ESTEC at Noordwijk, The Netherlands. Contract The selected candidate will receive good remuneration. Will be registered for both social security and tax in the Netherlands. The standard working hours are 40 per week. There are 12 public holidays and an additional 30 annual days holiday. Training to improve efficiency and provide strength for future career are of course included. Aurora assist with relocation both with support and financially. JOB DESCRIPTION Responsibilities Duties Tasks The main tasks envisaged are the Flight Dynamics support for the Operations Preparation of EPS SG during the detailed design Phase in 20162018 timeframe followed by the development implementation and validation phase 2018 onwards, including The detailed definition of Flight Dynamics operations concepts in the context of the EPSSG programme, contributing to the higher level programme operations documentation as relevant i.e. Reference Operations Plan and to the generation of operational procedures, Guides and operational configuration data Flight Dynamics databases and operational configuration data as required In the execution of previous task, take into account the current operational concepts and planned evolutions, in particular for relevant multimission andor reused elements Further coordinate the definition and implementation of Flight Dynamics Operations and Operational Interfaces with spacecraft, mission control, ground stations, dataproduct processing and system operations preparation teams, including launcher and LEOP services implementation and definition of handover conditions Support the review of documentation delivered by the satellite manufacturer as well as ground segment contractors, for Flight Dynamics operational aspects, including critical analysis of proposed designs, implementations and validation approaches and results, along with the necessary operational concepts envisaged Support ground segment development team through Flight Dynamics Subsystem acceptance and verification, as well as higher level system integration and validation testing, including the support to the definition of operational scenario validation testing Conduct where necessary mission analyses and preparation of Technical Notes to verify current operational approaches along with proposed contractors solutions Support the definition and conduct of Satellite System Validation Tests, and in particular for Flight Dynamics aspects e.g. manoeuvres Crosssupport and familiarization as necessary with current EUMETSAT Flight Dynamics operations of LEO satellites, including routine operations, planning and execution and evaluation of orbital manoeuvres, support to contingency operations, preparation and maintenance of relevant guides and procedures, operational configuration maintenance, and preparation of routine reports these activities may require intervention during the night and the nonworking days. Qualifications University degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline Aerospace Engineering, Mathematics, Physics Required knowledge Acquainted with the mathematical and physical principles of orbit determination and control for a LEO satellite Experience with Flight Dynamics orbit operations of a LEO satellite Experience with Flight Dynamics subsystem and operations development for a LEO satellite Experience working in Linuxbased systems Proven experience in formal operational validation of complex software systems, including formal documentation production, configuration control practices.
