Europes Metrological Satellite Agency EUMETSAT develops and operates a system of satellites that continually observe the land, atmosphere and oceans, providing data that enhances and safeguards the lives of European citizens. We are looking for someone to join us as a Software and Data Formats Engineer. This is an attractive opportunity offering variety and scope for development. In this role you will provide engineering support to data formatting services both for EUMETSATs satellite systems as well as satellites operated by other agencies and regional data retransmission services. You will be responsible for developing and maintaining state of the art knowledge related to data formats and you will be the internal point of contact in this area for other departments within the organisation. You will have the opportunity to actively contribute in the evolution of community standard data formats, specifically netCDF and HDF, with occasional travel to the US to attend symposiums on the subject. To be successful you should have a relevant degree or equivalent , as well as experience in each of the following areas Expert knowledge of data formats used in meteorological satellite data processing and exchange, including at least WMO formats BUFR, GRIB, netCDF and HDF. Expert knowledge of further format standards used in remote sensing would be of advantage Experience in the development and maintenance of operational software in C or C in a UNIX environment Experience in specifying software deliverables Ability to define and carry out rigorous testing of new software Good interpersonal and communication skills with proven ability to apply these within a team environment Experience of operating within a matrix environment with multiple internal and external interfaces Experience in working with or for a software service provision company. Experience in the area of meteorological satellite product processing, reformatting andor visualisation software will be considered an advantage. All applicants must be EUMETSAT member state nationals with a good working knowledge of the English language, both spoken and written. Knowledge of French would be considered advantageous. Your Tasks Include The Products Formats and Test Data Test Tools engineer shall support the Sentinel3 Operations with respect to our Clients Marine Payload Data Ground Segment PDGS in particular anomaly correction and software release process maintenance and necessary evolutions, including the necessary coordination with the data processing systems engineering and the multimission element engineers for the related interfaces with the rest of the Sentinel3 ground segment. Your Profile The consultant should have the following background 5 years experience in testing and maintaining product formats and formatters, test data and tests tools for large scale software systems missioninstrument data processing related. Experience in engineering evolutions of such software, test data and tools is also required. Knowledge and experience is required of software development lifecycles, system testing for Earth observation systems and use of test data and tools for supporting this, Knowledge and experience is required of formats and associated formatters used in Earth observation e.g. netCDF for marine applications and also used in other communities including HDF, BUFR and GRIB. Good knowledge of CICIJava programming language experience in a UNIXLinux based environment Scripting languages e.g. Python, Perl, TcliTk, shell XML and related technologies e.g. XPATH, SVG The Consultant shall be able to conduct all activities in an orderly and disciplined manner, shall be able to work calmly and correctly under stress and must be able to work with the minimum of supervision. Fluency in English is mandatory and a working knowledge of French would be a significant advantage.
