Global Warming Threatens Colder Climate for Europe
2015-07-03 15:56:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Climate News: Scientists have yet again warned that weakening ocean circulation in the North Atlantic could deliver a climate paradox-a colder Europe as a consequence of global warming. A study published in Nature Climate Change found that as sea ice off Iceland and Greenland retreats, the flow of cold, dense water to the bottom of the North Atlantic ocean could be reduced, and therefore weaken the warming effects of the Gulf Stream. The great submarine current-sometimes called the Atlantic Conveyor-flows...

Waste key to global climate protection, German study says
2015-06-30 12:18:52| Waste Management - Topix.net
Growing amounts of waste put an increasing burden on the climate, particularly in newly industrialising countries, where greenhouse gas emissions are rising, according to a new study for the German environment agency. While Germany has been able to reduce harmful emissions through waste processing, the waste management industry in many developing and newly industrialising countries, as well as in numerous OECD countries and the United States, could do much more to contribute to climate protection.

Major insurer explores risks using insurance to reduce climate shocks global food supplies
2015-06-23 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
ClimateWire: A stress test prepared by Lloyd's of London concluded that a chain reaction of floods, drought and related diseases could cripple the world's food supply, leading to a crisis that could spark further unrest, including the possibility of rioting in major cities, a terrorist attack in the United States and even a Russian invasion. Lloyd's, a major global insurer, outlined the scenario in a report last week. It is seen as an unlikely but possible scenario that could cut across the insurance industry's...

Climate change threatens 50 years of progress in global health, study says
2015-06-23 01:01:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Guardian: Climate change threatens to undermine half a century of progress in global health, according to a major new report. But the analysis also concludes that the benefits to health resulting from slashing fossil fuel use are so large that tackling global warming also presents the greatest global opportunity to improve peoples health in the 21st century. The report was produced by the Lancet/UCL commission on health and climate change, a collaboration of dozens of experts from around the world, and...

Pope Calls for Global Action on Climate Change and Environmental Problems
2015-06-18 19:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Yale Environment 360: Pope Francis released today his highly anticipated encyclical, which is largely focused on halting climate change and environmental degradation and emphasizes the importance of protecting impoverished communities from the worst effects. This is the first such letter from a leader of the Catholic Church to address environmental issues, analysts say. Climate change is a global problem with grave implications: environmental, social, economic, political, Pope Francis wrote. It represents one of the...
