2015-03-10 11:21:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) French ISP Free, an Iliad subsidiary, has launched what it claims is the world's first Android TV-based STB supporting 4k TV. The new box will be offered as part of its standard triple-play service at EUR 29.99 per month. The two-device system consists of a Freebox mini 4K server and a player. The Freebox Mini 4K supports ADSL2+, VDSL2 and FttH connectivity and its Bluetooth-based intelligent remote control can recognise voice commands. Free is supplying the Freebox mini 4K instead of the Freebox Crystal to new customers in fibre and unbundled copper areas. The bundle includes unlimited calls in France and to 100 destinations, access to Google apps including YouTube, and 200 channels, of which nearly 50 in HD. It also features a built-in femtocell for Free Mobile users. Existing subscribers to the Freebox Revolution service pay a supplement of EUR 1.99 to use the Freebox Mini 4K.

Free tests blocking Google AdWords on Freebox

2013-01-04 09:48:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) French ISP Free has introduced the beta version of software to block online ads, a controversial move being called "Adgate". Le Monde reports that the system was activated by default in a 3 January software upgrade for the Freebox STB/modem and starts working when customers restart the device. Free's 5.3 million broadband customers do not have the possibility of setting up a "white list" of websites where they are happy to see ads. PC Inpact writes that the ad blocking software works with all operating systems, eliminates Google AdWord spaces and some links. Banners are affected on some other sites, but this is aleatory and some are less affected than others, according to PC Inpact. Free, which wants Google and others to pay for access to its customers, told ZDNet that adblockers are legal and even promoted on Chrome and other browsers.
