How cold was it? Duke Energy Progress set a record Thursday

With temperatures falling into the single digits, Duke Progress set a new peak of 14,473 megawatt-hours for the hour ending at 8 a.m. Thursday. Turns out Duke Energy Corp. had good reason to ask its customers in the Carolinas to limit their use of electricity yesterday.

Duke Energy asks Carolinas' customers to reduce energy use

Duke Energy is asking its customers in North Carolina and South Carolina to reduce electricity usage during the next 24 hours to help avoid potentially high energy demand caused by the extreme cold. A statement from the Charlotte-based utility says the most critical time to reduce usage is Thursday between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m. Vice President of Transmission System Operations Nelson Peeler says if it becomes necessary, Duke Energy will institute rotating or sustained outages across its grid.

Duke Energy has hired Melissa Anderson , former human resources chief at Domtar Inc. , as its chief human resources officer, effective Jan. 21. Anderson will report directly to CEO Lynn Good .
