What a week in Washington. As a vast divide separates the congressional Republicans and Democrats when it comes to budget issues, The Hill is predicting a high likelihood that the automatic spending cuts known as the sequester will be implemented. Food Safety News reported this week that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) could conduct 2,100 fewer inspections at domestic and foreign food facilities and the U.S Department of Agricultures Food Safety and Inspection Service might have to furlough all employees for approximately two weeks to meet the extensive budget cuts. AMI: Meat Inspection Required Under Sequestration

Source: American Meat Institute On Friday, American Meat Institute (AMI) President J. Patrick Boyle wrote Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack to remind him of USDA’s legal obligations to provide meat inspection even under sequestration. Boyle sent the letter in response to comments made by USDA to media that sequestration would result in an across-the-board furlough of as much as 15 days for all Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) employees, including inspectors. read more
