Calves and yearlings traded mostly steady to $5 higher at auction, according to the Agricultural marketing Service (AMS). The full market advance was most evident for middleweight cattle weighing 500-700 pounds. Competition for these cattle has increased with cattle and grass interests becoming more prevalent. Although cash fed cattle trade was limited to Nebraska and Iowa-Minnesota through Friday afternoon, dressed prices were $4-$5 more than the previous week at $210 per cwt. Fewer, smaller feedlots responsible for more cattle

Compared to a year earlier, total capacity of feedlots with 1,000 head or more was unchanged Jan. 1 of this year at 16.9 million head. In fact, it was at about that same level the previous two years, too. Thats according to data from the National Agricultural Statistics Service, released with Fridays Cattle on Feed report. Feedlots with capacities of less than 1,999 head are feeding more cattle: 6.5% more cattle inventory than two years earlier and 5.8% more than the previous year. read more
