Zusammen haben sie die älteste bulgarische Hunderasse vor dem Aussterben bewahrt.Die Karakatchans sind eine jahrtausendalte Rasse von Herdenschutzhunden. Die Welpen wachsen zusammen mit der Herde auf und betrachten diese als ihre Familie, die sie im Fall einer Bedrohung verteidigen. Zur Zeit des kommunistischen Regimes standen die Karakatchans kurz vor dem Aussterben. Dass die Rasse überlebt hat, ist dem engagierten Einsatz von Sider Sedevchef und Elena Tsingarska, Mitarbeiterin der EuroNatur-Partnerorganisation Balkani, zu verdanken.
