Why massive Greenland glacier is melting from below
2015-11-18 15:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Christian Science Monitor: A massive glacier in northeast Greenland, named Zachariae Isstrom, has come detached from a stabilizing sill and is rapidly melting into the North Atlantic Ocean, according to a new study. Zachariae Isstrom began "accelerated retreat" in 2012 and is currently melting at a rate of 5 billion tons per year, a team of scientists from NASAs Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the University of Kansas, and the University of California-Irvine published in the journal Science last week. This spells bad news...

Greenlands Rapidly Melting Glaciers Will Result in Rising Sea Levels for Decades to Come
2015-11-15 17:13:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Climate News Network: A massive Greenland glacier that holds enough water to raise sea levels by half a meter [nearly 20 inches] is melting at speed, according to a new study. The Zachariae Isstrom in northeast Greenland has entered a phase of accelerated retreat, and is losing mass at the rate of 5 billion metric tons a year, according to U.S. scientists. They report in the journal Science that a succession of aerial surveys combined with multiple satellite observations has established that the base of the glacier...
Melting glacier? Yawn. Climate change is boring, worthy and terrifying

Guardian: Its the existential threat to our species, and it bores us to tears. Admit it. You think the consequences of human-driven climate change are terrifying, but it seems too abstract, too technical and too long term. A recent poll in the US found that, while most Americans accepted that the climate was indeed changing, less than a quarter admitted to be either extremely or very worried about it. So the latest scientific reports should have the effect of grabbing us by the lapels and admonishing us...

Whats Going on in Antartica? Is the Ice Melting or Growing?
2015-11-10 15:38:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
EcoWatch: Last week a study was published in the Journal of Glaciology by a group of NASA researchers reporting that satellite data shows that, as a whole, Antarctica has been gaining--rather than losing--ice mass during the past two or more decades. So was NASA and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) wrong about Antarcticas ice loss? Is the Antarctic ice growing? The short answer is best summarized by the title of Andrew Freedmans article on Mashable (which everyone should read):...
No, NASA has not reversed itself on dangerous melting of Antarctica
2015-11-04 15:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Mashable: Many of the scientific studies published in the past two years on the stability of the Antarctic ice sheet can best be characterized as anxiety-inducing, if not outright panic-causing. Studies have shown that huge chunks of the continent may be far more unstable than previously thought, and more susceptible to melting from manmade climate change and other factors. This is especially the case with the West Antarctic Ice Sheet and the glaciers along the Antarctic Peninsula. See also: Paris Climate...
