2014 was the year of the melting ice sheet
2014-12-30 13:56:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Quartz: Just as the planet swivels on the poles, so too does the fate of its coastlines. The disaster movie effects of climate change--drowning coastlines and raging blizzards, for instance--are tied to thawing ice sheets and glaciers in the Arctic and Antarctica. Research published throughout 2014 made this all the clearer--and scarier. Here's a roundup of what we learned this year about melting ice sheets: The melt rate in West Antarctica has trebled in the past decade Though scientists have known...
Peru's melting glaciers a deadly threat as temperatures rise
2014-12-12 15:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Reuters: High in the Peruvian Andes, the glacier-fed lake Laguna 513 brims with meltwater atop a populated valley in a region prone to earthquakes. Scientists warn that if a giant chunk of ice from the Hualcan glacier breaks off it could trigger a tsunami-like wave in Laguna 513 and send a lethal torrent of water cascading down the valley. It has happened before in the Andean nation. In 1970, a 7.9 magnitude earthquake shook ice blocks into highland lakes and unleashed an avalanche that buried the town...

With sea ice melting, Coast Guard proposing new shipping lanes to the Arctic
2014-12-07 15:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Associated Press: With global warming leading to increased traffic to a vulnerable Arctic, the U.S. Coast Guard is proposing a 4.6-mile wide shipping route through the Bering Strait to try to protect the region. Any accident in the sensitive area can be a major problem and traffic has increased tremendously, so the Coast Guard mapped out a voluntary two-way route -- akin to a highway for ships -- said agency project officer Lt. Kody Stitz. "We see more traffic and envision more traffic to continue," Stitz said....
Peru glaciers 'melting at alarming rate'
2014-12-06 15:34:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
BBC: Experts have warned that Peru's glaciers are melting at an alarming rate, threatening the survival of an estimated 30 million people. The water from the glaciers is used to generate hydro power and for irrigation. Scientists say the glaciers have lost more than one-fifth of their mass in just three decades due to global warming. Anbarasan Ethirajan reports.

Warmer seas could cause faster melting of Antarctic ice leading to rising sea levels, says study
2014-12-05 11:30:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Guardian: Warming water under Antarcticas ice shelves risks ice melting that could lead to a worrying rise in global sea levels, research has shown. Loss of the Antarctic ice shelves, which extend from the southern polar land mass over the underwater continental shelf, are likely to result in the glaciers behind them flowing more rapidly into the sea. That would feed more melting ice into the oceans, pushing up sea levels. Total melting of the West Antarctic ice sheet, which is close to the regions...
