'Best estimate' for impact of melting ice on sea level rise

2013-05-15 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

BBC: Researchers have published their most advanced calculation for the likely impact of melting ice on global sea levels. The EU-funded team says the ice sheets and glaciers could add 36.8cm to the oceans by 2100. Adding in other factors, sea levels could rise by up to 69cm, higher than previous predictions. The researchers say there is a very small chance that the seas around Britain could rise by a metre. The last Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report was highly detailed...

Finally, Some Not-Terrible Climate News: Greenland Not Melting Any Faster

2013-05-08 23:50:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Climate Desk: Back in 2006, scientists in Greenland made an alarming observation: Glaciers were crumbling into the ocean twice as fast. And not in little cocktail-sized cubes, either: Glaciologist Jason Box accurately predicted the spot where a hunk four times the size of Manhattan would later shear off into the sea. At the same time, the inland top of the ice sheet was thawing at record levels; last summer, for the first time in 150 years, its entire surface was melting. By summer`s end, this water alone raised...

Land o' lakes: Melting glaciers transform Alpine landscape

2013-04-27 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Spiegel: Climate change is dramatically altering the Swiss Alps, where hundreds of bodies of water are being created by melting glaciers. Though the lakes can attract tourists and even generate electricity, local residents also fear catastrophic tidal waves. In the 1990s, the first cracks began to appear in the mighty tongue of the Trift Glacier in the central Swiss canton of Bern. In 2002, the peak of the ice mass burst into thousands of pieces. Since it lay in a hollow, the water swelled into a lake...

Antarctic ice melting 10 times faster than 600 years ago

2013-04-15 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Australian Broadcasting Corporation: A report has found that the Antarctic summer ice melt is now occurring 10 times faster than it did 600 years ago. Scientists from the British Antarctic Survey and the Australian National University drilled a 360-metre ice core near the northern tip of the peninsula to to identify past temperatures. The ice core gave an extraordinary insight into the temperatures, revealing the coolest conditions, and the lowest melt, occurred six centuries ago. By comparison, it found temperatures now are...

Antarctic ice melting at record rate, study shows

2013-04-15 11:45:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Press Association: Summer ice is melting at a faster rate in the Antarctic peninsula than at any time in the last 1,000 years, new research has shown. The evidence comes from a 364-metre ice core containing a record of freezing and melting over the previous millennium. Layers of ice in the core, drilled from James Ross Island near the northern tip of the peninsula, indicate periods when summer snow on the ice cap thawed and then refroze. By measuring the thickness of these layers, scientists were able to match...
