UK on flood alert as heavy rain mixes with melting snow
2013-01-27 10:56:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Press Association: More than 200 flood alerts are in place across the UK as heavy rain has mixed with melting snow. There have been more reports of flooding in south Wales overnight as the downpours replace almost two weeks of snow. Norfolk police have reported flooding caused by melting snow and ice, which has closed a number of roads in the area. Wales, central England, and the south-west will be the worst-hit areas, with at least 2.5cm (1in) of rain expected by mid-morning on Sunday, while the rest of the...
Why Greenlands Melting Could Be the Biggest Climate Disaster of All
2013-01-24 16:45:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Climate Desk: As an expert on Greenland who has traveled 23 times to the massive, mile thick northern ice sheet, Box has shown an uncanny ability to predict major melts and breakoffs of Manhattan-sized ice chunks. A few years back, he foretold the release of a "4x Manhattans" piece of ice from Greenland`s Petermann Glacier, one so big that once afloat it was dubbed an "ice island." In a scientific paper published in February of 2012, Box further predicted "100 % melt area over the ice sheet" within another decade...

United Kingdom: Heavy rain and melting snow expected to cause floods
2013-01-24 14:58:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Guardian: Heavy rain combined with melting snow is likely to cause flooding in parts of the UK at the weekend, the Met Office has warned. Up to 40mm of rain is predicted to fall on hills in the west of Britain just as snow that has accumulated over the past week thaws. The Met Office said a final fall of snow was expected to hit parts of Scotland, Wales and England on Friday. It said snow would reach areas of Scotland during the morning and spread through other parts of Britain, reaching eastern England...

A Closer Look at Melting Ice in the Andes and Antarctica
2013-01-23 18:03:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
New York Times: Fascinating new studies of two of the world`s regions with accelerated melting, the Antarctic Peninsula and the Andes, are worth a closer look: One paper, published in The Cyrosphere, finds that glaciers throughout the tropical Andes have been melting in the last 30 years at a faster rate than at any time since the peak of the "little ice age" 300 years ago. Here`s a direct link: "Current state of glaciers in the tropical Andes: a multi-century perspective on glacier evolution and climate change."...

Massive melting of Andes glaciers
2013-01-23 12:50:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
BBC: Glaciers in the tropical Andes have shrunk by an average of 30-50% since the 1970s, according to a study. The glaciers, which provide fresh water for tens of millions in South America, are retreating at their fastest rate in the past 300 years. The study included data on about half of all Andean glaciers and blamed the melting on an average temperature rise of 0.7C from 1950-1994. Details appear in the academic journal Cryosphere. The authors report that glaciers are retreating everywhere...
