Orange takes control of Morocco's Meditel
2015-07-27 08:50:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Orange has acquired an additional 9 percent stake in Moroccan operator Meditel, raising its total holding to 49 percent. Orange said it signed an agreement with Fipar-Holding (the Moroccan Caisse de Depot et de Gestion group), FinanceCom to increase Orange's interest in Meditel in application of the agreements they signed in December 2010. Meditel's board will now include five members proposed by Orange and four members from the Moroccan shareholders, and the company will be fully consolidated in the financial statements of the Orange group. Meditel, created in 1999, holds a 31 percent share of the Moroccan mobile market with 13 million subscribers. Meditel will complete the overhaul of its mobile network this year, extending its 3G coverage to 95 percent of the population. Meditel was the first operator to launch 4G service in Morocco, in June.

Orange enters talks to sell Orange Armenia to Ucom
2015-07-22 08:45:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Orange has entered into exclusive discussions with Armenian ISP Ucom to sell it 100 percent of its mobile subsidiary Orange Armenia. The planned disposal is in line with Orange's Essentials2020 plan, which sees the group focus on providing customers with high-quality mobile and fixed convergent services. The operator said that although Orange Armenia has made significant progress in subscriber numbers and profitability, it does not have the necessary scale to carry out by itself the massive investment necessary to offer convergent services. Its sale to Ucom would enable the creation of a strong Armenian operator offering both fixed and mobile services. Orange Armenia, created in 2009, has deployed one of the country's biggest 3G+ networks in Yerevan and rural areas. It had 630,000 customers at the end of 2014 and employs 500 people.
