Structural steel fabricator Canam Group is facing less competition from foreign firms in Canada as the lower loonie, decreased energy activity and the U.S. economic recovery prompts American rivals to chase opportunities closer to home. "These three things make the Canadian market less attractive to others and we ourselves have done OK," CEO Marc Dutil said Thursday after releasing the company's strongest fourth-quarter results in seven years.

There was a splattering of red ink in the oilpatch Thursday, as the steep drop in oil prices weighed on the bottom lines of some of the energy sector's biggest names in the last three months of 2014. Oilsands producer Cenovus Energy Inc. said it's cutting its headcount by 15 per cent, mostly contractors, amounting to 800 positions.

If low oil prices stick around much longer, the operations manager at Lac La Biche Transport Ltd. says he will have to layoff workers. Kevin Warawa says business in the town, about 200 kilometres northeast of Edmonton, is down by about a quarter compared to the same time a year ago and oilsands operators that hire his company to haul equipment are pushing for rates to be cut by up to a quarter.
