A Descent Module Control and Data Management Systems Engineer is required with several years of engineering experience in the design and development of spacecraft structures and subsystems needed to survive the EDL phase of a planetary mission. The Key Person shall be responsible for system engineering tasks related to the complex procedures and closedloop feedback systems required to guide a planetary lander through entry, descent and landing. In this area of work, the tasks will typically include Requirements and function definition Interface specification and control Design trades and documentation Resource, margin and risk management Verification and validation In addition to having a University degree or equivalent in a relevant engineering discipline, the Consultant should have as a prerequisite Several years of professional experience in control and data management systems Understanding of EDL procedures and requirements for interplanetary missions Applied systems engineering knowledge in one or more of the following fields propulsion, mechanical, thermal, power, telecommunications and avionics Heat shield design and parachute deployment Excellent conceptual and analytical skills Working knowledge and experience in the following areas would be considered an advantage Handson experience in space system integration and testing Surface detection radar systems Landing thruster control systems and airbag deployment Knowledge of the design and development lifecycle of science missions and payloads Working in an international framework The Key Person shall have good communications skills, to allow the effective communication of information under a variety of circumstances. Description Overview The Control Systems and Sensors section has the following roles and responsibilities Definition and implementation of AOCS Attitude and Orbit Control Systems for Earth Observation, Telecom, Navigation satellites and for Astronomy Observatories. The functional support provided to these projects e.g. Sentinel, Earth Care, MTG, Alphasat, Small GEO, Galileo, GAIA, Solar Orbiter, includes Participation to project reviews SRR, PDR CDR, . AOCS design, analyses and simulations control loops design and modelling, FDIR, independent simulator setup, functional verification and performance budgets. Review of AOCS SW implementation. Sensors and actuators selection and procurement support. AIVAIT support test benches, review of test plans and test results. Operations support review of Operations Manual, rehearsal and LEOP. Support to inorbit analysis. Conception, initialisation and supervision of corresponding enabling AOCS technology RD High Accuracy Pointing, Generic AOCS Architecture Building Blocks, Innovative AOCS FDIR Solutions including prototyping and tools development. Sensors and inertial actuators technology development APS, Star Trackers, sun sensors, Earth sensors, magnetometers, gyros, accelerometers, magnetotorquers, reaction wheels, CMGs. Development and utilisation of the Control Hardware Laboratory e.g. sensor characterisation and testing. Maintenance, development and setup of AOCS simulation tools. Participation to the elaboration and promotion of ECSS standards in the E60 domain. Specific tasks The Contractor will provide technical support to ESA projects in design, development, and verification of AOCS for Earth Observation, Scientific, Navigation or Telecom projects, including participation to reviews and performing analysessimulations. In addition, the Contractor may support the AOCS hardware sensorsactuators procurement in ESA satellite programmes as well as contribute to AOCS hardware and technology development and laboratory activities in the frame of RD contracts. Specific Competence Requirements As per Job Class in Control and Aerospace engineering. At least 6 years of proven experience in the design, tuning, analysis and simulation of AOCS systems in different project phases. HW knowledge sensors, computer, actuators. AOCS AIT at subsystem and system level. Proven knowledge of commercial modelbased design tools MATLAB. Ability to interface with industry.
