Senegal oil drilling provides boost for explorer FAR

Junior explorer FAR's latest drilling offshore Senegal site reveals oil flows that both venture partners and analysts say should be commercial at long-term oil prices. The better-than-expected results from the SNE-2 well drilled about 100 kilometres off the coast of the west African nation lifted the shares of venture operator Cairn Energy in London overnight, and have also buoyed FAR shares in Sydney on Tuesday.

Woodside scores drilling success with gas find off Myanmar

Woodside Petroleum has made a gas discovery offshore Myanmar in a find described by chief executive Peter Coleman as "encouraging" for the future of the exploration program in the country. The Shwe Yee Htun-1 well found gas over a depth of 129 metres, of which a relatively modest 10 metres has been designated as "net gas pay", signalling it could be of a good enough quality to yield commercial production.

Hill: President Obama has a chance to significantly tie the hands of his successor and his or her energy policy with the upcoming five-year plan for offshore drilling leases. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), part of the Interior Department, is likely in January or February to move forward on setting a schedule for lease sales for offshore oil and natural gas drilling rights, and to put the finishing touches on it later in the year.
