A vacancy for a Materials and Processes Engineer mf has arisen within Airbus Defence Space in Toulouse. You will join the MP Operations France department and will take over the interfaces between Materials and Processes Engineering and AIT, mainly at the level of glued assemblies and their behaviour in space environment UV radiation, cryogenics, heat cycling. By managing the interface between MP and AIT, you will ensure that the Materials and Processes used in AIT conform to design work. On the MP side, this involves management of the AIT technologies and procedures database, management of the AIT Material Process Control Board and of the Declared Material ListDeclared Process List, along with responding to major anomalies. This position involves frequent clean room and laboratory work, along with numerous contacts with external laboratories, agencies ESA, CNES and academic partners. This role will involve travel for business twice per month 1 week twice per year abroad and therefore you must be able to travel accordingly. As the successful candidate you will be able to demonstrate the following skills Holder of an Engineering degree or university equivalent, ideally in chemistry andor materials science, Initial materials and processes experience in the space or related restrictive field aeronautics, motor industry, etc., Knowledge of glued assemblies, along with related analytical and laboratory means, Knowledge of analytical and test techniques, including laboratory means, Auxiliary knowledge wiring, contamination and cleanliness, thermics would be an advantage, Advanced level in English and French, fluency in a 3rd language would be an advantage. For one of our main customers ESAESTEC, we are currently looking for Engineering Project Support for NonMetallic Materials and Processes Tasks and Responsibilities Testing of adhesive bonding systems and processes, including adhesives applications for metals and nonmetallic materials. Selection of specific adhesives for specific end uses e.g. extreme temperature applications, integrity under thermal loads. Performing general failure analysis of materials and assemblies with emphasis on adhesion issues. Evaluation of surface treatments and its effects on bonding systems. Longterm durability of adhesive joints. Surface modification and analysis due to space environmental effects like atomic oxygen and plasma effects. Performing materials qualification programmes for nonmetallic materials and analysis. Stabilisation and degradation analysis of nonmetallic materials under space environmental conditions. Producing clear and professional reports as specified for the task. Supporting the inclusion of results in internal databases. Experience and education a PhD or Master degree in materials science, materials physicschemistry or a related field together with a good working knowledge of materials process technology and a good understanding of physics. good familiarity with advanced surface analysis techniques XPS, AFM, Raman, TOFSIMS, SEM EDXWDX, FIB a strong background on other advanced materials characterisation techniques with specific emphasis in thermal analysis techniques. experience carrying out RD studies to understand behaviour of materials under extreme environments such as space. familiarity and understanding of ESA PA requirements ECSS as well as ISO17025 requirements Experience in one or more of the following techniques is also required Thermal analysis Differential scanning calorimetry DSC, temperaturemodulated DSC, dynamic mechanical thermal testing DMTA, thermo gravimetric analysis TGA, TMA, DEA, coupled thermal analysis, LFA, DDS etc. Materials characterisation techniques Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy SEM, atomic force microscopy AFM, IR UV spectroscopy, thermooptical characterisations as well as surface sensitive techniques like ESCA. Maintenance of the relevant test equipment. The Contractor shall ensure that the equipment under his responsibility is kept in an operational state and shall ensure that all necessary routine calibration and maintenance activities are carried out. Tasks and Responsibilities Act as Project focal point with a materials and processes expert role for defined ESA projects, reporting to the Projects Product Assurance and Safety Managers and coordinating with other domains in the Materials and Components Technology Division The holder shall be able to autonomously support project reviews for materials process approval including safety reviews for use on launchers and spacecraft . DUTIES The postholder will report to the Head of the Materials Space Evaluation and Radiation Effects Section and is responsible for providing technical support to ESA projects involving use of nonmetallic materials in space applications. This includes evaluation of the general properties of materials, as well as assessment of the various environmental effects on materials used in manned and unmanned space applications. In addition, the incumbent will be required to manage RD contracts in their area of competence. Specific duties of the post will include ensuring materials and processes and subassemblies are compatible with mission requirements in terms of ground and space environmental effects vacuum, temperature, radiation, contamination, synergistic effects, etc., as well as with storage and launcher requirements developing and implementing new laboratory test methods and materials analysis techniques for the above, focusing on composite materials and manufacturing and on related nondestructive investigation NDI methods assessing novel nonmetallic materials carbon fibre reinforced composites CFRP, ceramic, optical coatings, glasses, etc., processes and technologies joining and bonding, etc. for future space applications. This includes analysing future mission requirements and preparing appropriate evaluation techniques reviewing project documentation on nonmetallic mechanical parts, materials and processes and participating in project meetings reviews, NonConformance Review Boards NRB, etc.. This includes coordinating failure analysis and resolution with the support of the laboratory establishing specifications and procedures for the qualification of materials in compliance with ECSS and ISO 17025 coordinating and defining future technology requirements with ESA and industrial stakeholders defining and managing technical activities for tasks to be performed by industry, e.g. in the framework of the various ESA technology programmes contributing to circulation of the results of the activities performed and the transfer of knowledge across the Agency. QUALIFICATIONS Applicants for this post should have a Masters degree or equivalent qualification in materials engineering and science, materials physicschemistry, applied physics, or a related field, as well as several years of industrial handson experience in aerospace hardware and RD. A strong background in advanced materials manufacturing and engineering in highend technology domains such as aerospace, automotive, nuclear and medical is required. Familiarity with ESA Product Assurance PA requirements, as well as relevant national and international standards for materials and processes, would be an asset. Candidates should have good interpersonal and communication skills. They should have the ability to work effectively, autonomously and cooperatively in a diverse and international team environment and to define and implement solutions in line with team and individual objectives and project deadlines. In addition, applicants should have good analytical, organisational and reporting skills, a proactive attitude to solving problems and an interest in innovative technologies. The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these two languages is required together with a working knowledge of the other language.
