A mother and three of her children on their way to a Halloween parade were killed and a fourth child seriously injured when their vehicle was hit by a freight train in southern Illinois, police said on Friday. The accident happened on Thursday night in Vandalia, a town of roughly 7,000 people located about 70 miles northeast of St. Louis, just minutes ahead of a Halloween parade that draws many visitors, said Vandalia Police Chief Jeff Ray.

A settlement has been reached in the only case to go to trial following a 2009 plane crash into a home outside Buffalo that killed 50 people. The wrongful death case was brought by the family of Douglas Wielinski against Continental Airlines, regional carrier Colgan Air and Colgan parent, Pinnacle Airlines, which operated Continental Connection Flight 3407.

The Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department and other state agencies have been directed by federal officials to turn over crash information involving a guardrail system used across the state that is the subject of a lawsuit claiming it can malfunction during crashes and slice through cars. "We have received the request," Randy Ort, an agency spokesman, said last week.

French oil giant Total SA has named Patrick Pouyanne as chief executive to replace Christophe de Margerie, who was killed earlier this week in a plane crash in Moscow. Barely 36 hours after de Margerie's death, Total's board chose Pouyanne, 51, at a board meeting Wednesday.
