Study of data communication within a high performance computing environment One of our Space Clients in Germany is looking for a researcher to work on a study to address communication protocols and architecture supporting very high performance datafile exchanges within a data centre environment. The submission deadline for applicants is September 7th 2015. Study objectives 1. To evaluate by benchmarkingtradeoff the most suitable data transfer solution to be used within the MTG data centre. 2. To propose a data centric model for a ground infrastructure able to support an efficient mechanism for Big Data exchange between two or more locally deployed ground components. The aim of this study is to derive a data transfer solution and a reference architecture which could be reused to support the procurement process of the individual MTG ground segment facilities, to provide alternative and corrective solution for the procured ones and to constitute a guideline for development of the ground segment reference architecture. The tradeoff analysis supporting both objectives shall cover existing technology standards and trends foreseen for the midterm 5 years. The performance benchmarking process in object 1. shall be performed in a representative test bed. The second objective shall lead to the generation of a reference architecture that can be used as a framework to generate various architectures in a coherent way. Tasks 1. Benchmarking performance assessment of reliable file transfer applications which are FTP based as well as alternative protocols or implementations, measuring and testing them in a reference and representative test bed. 2. Defining a theoretical reference architecture that could be used as support for the MTG ground segment facilities procurement and that will provide guideline for future mission development. Part 1 Analysis, Benchmarking and Tradeoff of Solutions Inputs The Statement of Work The Contractors proposal Kickoff Minutes of Meeting Eventual specification inputs for the test bed setup Tasks Perform a technology analysis, including the review of emerging standards, transfer protocols, applications and solutions which can be FTP based or rely on alternative technologies or implementations e.g. iWARP. As an outcome of this analysis, a technology e .g. Ethernet, Infiniband and a range of 3 up to 5 technical solutions will be proposed by and agreed with the client for subsequent benchmarking activity. Tune a standard Linux FTP to obtain the maximum performance and use this as the reference against which the performance of the selected protocols is evaluated. Assess and evaluate the performances of the FTP based applications and alternative solutions and compare them with the tuned FTP reference, measuring and testing them benchmarking in a representative test bed. You will then tradeoff and make a recommendation for the best solution. Outputs Concise weekly reports. Analysis, Benchmarking and Tradeoff Report. Final Presentation. Part 2 DataCentric Reference Architecture Inputs The Statement of Work. The Contractors proposal. Kickoff Minutes of Meeting. Outputs of Part 1. Tasks Design a Reference Architecture. The activity starts from the definition of a datacentric logical model i.e. description of the Distribution Information Infrastructure supporting the location, access, management and delivery of the data leading to a physical solution Connection and Communication solutions adopted. The proposed solution shall include the architectural paradigms adopted e.g. object based storage systems and their implementation e.g. OSD, LUSTRE file systems, etc. Demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed architecture, assessing the different application, computing and infrastructure technology solutions. The assessment shall use as criteria Measures of effectiveness MOEs, to be agreed by the client, that include data circulation performance, scalability, reliability and sustainability. Outputs Concise weekly reports. System Reference Architecture Design Document presenting the logicalphysical architectural design solution and including the justification for the architectural choices based on the MOEs. Final Presentation.

Energy-efficient Optical Communication between Silicon Chips achieves 108 Gbps
2015-08-04 17:17:48| Semiconductors - Topix.net
Compact optical transmission possibilities are of great interest in faster and more energy-efficient data exchange between electronic chips. One component serving this application is the Mach-Zehnder modulator , which is able to convert electronic signals into optical signals.
