A new cryptovirus called "B0r0nt0K" has been putting Linux and possibly Windows Web servers at risk of encrypting all of the infected domain's files. The new ransomware threat and the ransom of 20 bitcoins -- about $75,000 -- first came to light last week in a forum post. A client's website had all its files encrypted and renamed with the .rontok extension appended to them, the forum user indicated.

A family of Linux malware targeting Linux and BSD servers has been lurking around for five years. Dubbed "Linux/Mumblehard," the malware contains a backdoor and a spamming daemon, both written in Perl. The components are mainly Perl scripts encrypted and packed inside an executable and linkable format, or ELF, said Eset. In some cases, one ELF executable with a packer nests inside another.

Web servers running a long-outdated version of the Linux kernel were attacked with dramatic speed over two days last week, Cisco Systems said on Thursday. All the affected servers were running the 2.6 version, first released in December 2003, of the Linux kernel, which is the core of the operating system. Most were running a 2.6 Linux kernel version released in 2007 or earlier, wrote Martin Lee, technical lead of Threat Intelligence for Cisco.
