Google Chrome dumps 30-year-old Windows technology

Google last week said that it was finally ditching a 30-year-old technology to display fonts on Web pages in its Chrome browser for Windows. In an announcement Thursday about some of the notable changes in Chrome for version 37, which reached Google's Beta build channel earlier that day, a software engineer said the preview relied on Microsoft's DirectWrite technology.

A supply chain compromise is a security pro's worst nightmare. The thought of malware being planted on computer devices before they leave the factory sends shivers down a cyberdefender's spine. A disturbing case of such poisoning was reported last week by researchers at TrapX. The researchers found an APT was being used to infect a version of Windows XP embedded on devices.

Future Java 7 security patches will work on Windows XP despite end of official support

Oracle has dispelled rumors that the upcoming security update for Java 7 and those it will release in the future might not work on Windows XP. "We expect all versions of Java that were supported prior to the Microsoft de-support announcement to continue to work on Windows XP for the foreseeable future," said Henrik Stahl, vice-president of product management in the Java Platform Group at Oracle, in a blog post Friday.
Leaked build of Windows 9 shows reborn Start menu, Metro apps running on the Desktop

Over the last couple of days, screenshots that purport to be from an early build of Windows 9 (Threshold) have leaked online. Most notably, one of these screenshots includes the new, resurrected Start menu that Microsoft first showed off at its Build conference in April. Another screenshot shows Metro apps running in a window on the Desktop.
