New China-developed OS takes aim at Android, Windows
2014-01-17 13:44:46| InfoWorld: Top News
Concern about secret U.S. surveillance programs is fueling the development of another homegrown operating system in China, one that promises to offer a more secure alternative to rival OSes such as Android and Windows. The Linux-based COS, which stands for China Operating System, is just the latest OS to come out from the nation, at a time when Android and Windows are found on most smartphones and PCs in the country. The makers of the software have been vocal in wanting to break the U.S. hold over China's software market.

Nokias Android smartphone looks a lot like Windows Phone, should be released in 2014
2014-01-16 19:25:14| Extremetech
New photos of Nokia's upcoming Android handset, code named Normandy, have leaked -- and rather oddly, it appears the standard Android UI has been stripped out and replaced with something that looks a bit like Windows Phone. In a separate leak, it would appear that the Normandy hardware design, which looks almost identical to a Nokia Lumia handset, is near-final. It would seem that, despite the imminent finalization of Microsoft's acquisition of Nokia, this rather odd device is still on schedule to be released this year.

We've all been there: You're just sitting there peacefully at your computer, perhaps with your mom or girlfriend looking over your shoulder while you show her some travel snaps, when suddenly a noisy video starts playing in the background. What follows is a manic hunt to find and shut down that embarrassing emanation, preferably before the first expletive, moan, or power chord gushes forth from your speakers. With the new stable version of Chrome, however, you will now see a speaker icon in tabs that are currently making noise. Genius.

Google stages coup against Windows 8 with Chrome OS-like update for Metro
2014-01-15 16:45:11| InfoWorld: Top News
Google yesterday revamped the Windows 8 Metro app version of its new Chrome 32 browser to resemble Chrome OS, the operating system that powers Chromebooks. It also promoted several major changes in Chrome's "stable" channel that it had earlier trumpeted in rougher builds of the browser -- including audio indicators on tabs, a more aggressive anti-malware blocker, and a parental spying tool -- and patched 11 security vulnerabilities.
