ATMs running Windows XP robbed with infected USB sticks yes, most ATMs still run Windows

2013-12-30 19:02:05| Extremetech

A high-tech criminal group in Europe has been infecting ATMs (cash machines) with malware, and then completely emptying the machines without a trace. The group has not yet been caught and the attacks continue -- and thus very few details have been released -- but we assume that they've already made off with millions of pounds/euros. Apples new overpriced $10,000 Mac Pro is $2,000 cheaper than the equivalent Windows PC

2013-12-30 16:27:56| Extremetech

Last week, the new Mac Pro finally went on sale. At $3000 for the entry-level model, and a max price of $9,600 for a customized top-of-the-line model with a 12-core CPU and two GPUs, the Mac Pro certainly isn't cheap. If you take a closer look at the spec, though, the Mac Pro, rather unusually for an Apple product, is a surprisingly good deal. If you try to match the components as closely as possible, it would actually cost around $11,500 to build the equivalent Windows-powered DIY PC.

Chromebooks pick up 10% of the computer market in 2013, capitalizing on Windows 8s failure

2013-12-30 14:21:41| Extremetech

Surprisingly, out of Amazon's top three best-selling laptops this holiday season, two of them are Chromebooks. Even weirder, according market research company NPD, Chromebooks account for 21% of all commercial US laptop sales so far this year, and 10% of all computers and tablets sold in the US. In 2012, Chromebooks accounted for just 0.2% of all computer and tablet sales. Is this really happening? Is Google doing it again, first with Android taking the world by storm, and now Chrome OS? Is the low-cost, netbook-in-sheep's-clothing Chromebook the surprise breakout hit of 2013?
