According to a recent and fairly reliable source, Nokia is preparing to launch an Android-powered smartphone in 2014. Judging by the latest leaked images, Nokia's Android phone -- code named Normandy -- will look just like a Windows Phone Lumia, with Nokia's customary colorful polycarbonate unibody shell, but without the capacitive buttons at the bottom of the screen. With Microsoft's acquisition of Nokia's handset business expected to be finalized in early 2014, this is a rather curious move.
Dell to add Chromebook 11, looks beyond Windows and Android

Dell said it would join a growing market of thin-and-light Chrome OS laptops with the new Chromebook 11, but the system will initially be available only to educational institutions. The company did not provide specifications for the laptop, but in an email said more Chromebooks will be announced for "budget-strapped" small-and-medium business and consumers in the coming months.

With Windows 8.1 out of the way, Microsoft has now begun work on Windows 8.2. According to sources close to the development Windows 8.2, dubbed Threshold, Microsoft will bring Windows, Windows Phone and Xbox One closer together -- to the threshold, if you will, of being a fully unified OS. Furthermore, again according to insider sources, Windows 8.2 will introduce a "traditional desktop" SKU that is optimized for mouse-and-keyboard Desktop users and resurrects the original Start menu.

Microsoft says it made a mistake last week when it posted Oct. 30, 2014 as last day it would sell Windows 7 preinstalled on PCs.It doesn't say exactly how the mistake occurred, but that the correct status of the last sale date is "to be determined."The company lists two end-of-sale dates for its operating systems: one for retail software by itself and one for PCs with the OS preinstalled.
