IDC says world smartphone market contracted 1.3% in Q2

(Telecompaper) The global smartphone market contracted 1.3 percent year-on-year in the second quarter to 341.6 million units, as many smaller players saw a drop in shipments, according to latest figures from IDC. The figures contrast with an earlier report from Strategy Analytics that estimated the market grew 5.5 percent in Q2.

Chinese groups lead 5.5% growth in global smartphone market in Q2

(Telecompaper) The global smartphone market maintained an annual growth rate of 5.5 percent in the second quarter, reaching total shipments of 360 million, according to the latest research from Strategy Analytics. Chinese smartphone makers Huawei, Oppo and Xiaomi led the market growth, while Samsung held its lead with a 22 percent market share.

Analysts at odds over Q2 smartphone shipments

Conflicting reports on the second quarter performance of the smartphone market came out on Wednesday, with IDC saying year-on-year global shipments fell 1.3%, while Strategy Analytics said they were up 5.5%. According to IDC, shipments came in at 341.6 million, compared to 346.1 million a year earlier. Strategy Analytics put shipments at 360.4 million, up from 341.5 million. Huawei sales growth slows to 15% in H1, smartphone shipments up 21%

(Telecompaper) Huawei said it grew across all three of its business groups in the first half of 2017. The company expects to "maintain its current momentum, and round out the year in a positive financial position".

LG mobile back in the red in Q2 as premium smartphone sales disappoint

(Telecompaper) LG Electronics saw its mobile phone business fall back in the red in the second quarter, after a small profit in Q1. With weak sales in the premium smartphone market and an increase in raw material costs, the mobile business had a quarterly operating loss of KRW 132.4 billion (USD 117.3 million). After a positive operating margin of 0.1 percent in Q1, LG Mobile was back at a negative 4.9 percent in Q2, similar to the minus 4.1 percent a year ago.
