A federal judge has ordered an Irish drug manufacturer to halt its plans to discontinue its widely used Alzheimer's medication, allegedly in an effort to drive patients to a newer patented drug. U.S. District Judge Robert Sweet tells Dublin-based Actavis PLC to continue making the drug Namenda available through July, when generic alternatives become available.

New York's attorney general says a drug manufacturer has been ordered to halt plans to discontinue its widely used Alzheimer's medication, allegedly in an effort to drive patients to a newer patented drug. Attorney General Eric Schneiderman alleges anti-trust and state law violations by Dublin-based Actavis PLC and New York subsidiary Forest Laboratories in an effort to avoid losses from cheaper generic alternatives coming out next year.

Biogen Rises on Data From Early-Stage Alzheimer's Drug Trial

Biogen Idec Inc. shares rose after the company said its Alzheimer's drug showed promising early results and will be quickly moved into a final-stage trial. In a small, early stage trial, Biogen's drug BIIB037 reduced beta amyloid in the brain, said Doug Williams, executive vice president of research and development, at a Deutsche Bank conference in Boston today.
