The nation's top patent court has given its seal of approval to a hefty $1.4 million award of legal fees against the largest publicly traded "non-practicing entity," Acacia Research Corporation. The award was granted one year ago by US District Judge Gregory Sleet, and it was one of the first to be decided under the new Octane Fitness caselaw, which makes it easier for defendants to get their legal fees in baseless patent suits.

On August 31, 2015, highway contractors Trinity Industries, Inc. and Trinity Highway Products, LLC appealed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit a $663,360,750 final judgment entered against them under the federal False Claims Act . At the conclusion of a six-day trial that commenced on October 13, 2014, the jury rendered a unanimous verdict, finding Trinity "knowingly made, used, or caused to be made or used, a false record of statement material to a false or fraudulent claim" in violation of the FCA.

In a long-standing dispute between Venezuelan state-owned Oil Company Petroleos de Venezuela SA and ConocoPhillips, a New York district court judge upheld ConocoPhillips' acquisition of a 50% stake in a Texas refinery. The two parties were former joint partners in an oil refining operation but disagreements between them led to the triggering of a contract provision that automatically dissolved the joint venture.
