Summary A great opportunity for a keen laboratory technician to join the Telespazio VEGA UK team working on site at ESTEC, supporting teams across both metallic and nonmetallic materials and processes, as well as assessing customer needs for laboratory based and analysis activities. Responsibilities Duties The successful candidate will be involved in some of the following duties Performing measurements and analyses on metallic and nonmetallic material. Including Cleanliness and contamination control related activities, PCBs and electronic assembly. Issuing dedicated testing procedures and developing the documentation Recording test requests and test results in the relevant quality management systems and databases Setting up and operating equipment analysis tools devoted to the assessment of space environmental effects. Including Assessment by simulating the space environment vacuum, radiation, ATOX, contamination, thermal Pre post characterisation by analytical techniques thermal analysis, chemical analysis, physical and microscopic analysis, surface analysis, spectroscopic analysis, NDI techniques etc. Using a variety of laboratory tools, including acoustic microscopy, optical microscopy, scanning microscopy, confocal microscopy, XRD, XRay imaging, NDI etc., XPS, surface tension, Auger Microscopy, Raman Spectroscopy, Atomic Force Microscopy, IST Testing Performing mechanical, thermomechanical, thermal and corrosion characterisation testing. Including Static, fatigue, thermogravimetric, differential scanning calorimetry, CTE determination, thermal diffusivityconductivity analysis, coupled and advanced thermal modelling techniques for physicochemical analysis, stresscorrosion, galvanic, humiditysalt fog testing Performing all verification activities on Printed Circuit Boards and electronics assemblies Recording sample properties or condition during and after test, accurately and legibly Drafting relevant test reports for all performed test activities Checking test equipment performance, and reporting any anomalies or faults Improving test procedures and ensuring that these are executed correctly Maintaining relevant test equipment, ensuring that the equipment under their responsibility is kept in an operational state and all necessary routine calibration and maintenance activities are performed Qualifications Experience Technical degree BSc, diploma or equivalent from a recognized institution or equivalent with minimum 4 years of relevant experience Essential Skills Strong handson materials laboratory experience related to Metallic and nonmetallic materials Manufacturing and applied processes cleanliness, contamination control, PCBs and electronic assembly Characterisation verification and failure investigation A strong background on space simulation facilities Proven understanding and knowledge of analytical techniques for materials analysis and ability to carry them out in compliance to an ISO 17025 or other Quality Management System applicable standards Qualities Capable of working in a timely manner in order to meet assigned deadlines Able to balance the demands of multiple projects Good interpersonal and communication skills Able to issue clear and concise materials testing reports Further Details All roles within Telespazio VEGA have a defined closing date, however if a successful candidate is found before the advert expires the role will be closed early. You will control and manage the operation of the Materials Laboratory, in support of all Space Systems products at Stevenage, reporting to the UK Space Systems Materials Manager. Your main tasks and responsibilities will include Management of the Materials Laboratory resources work load assignment training facilities. Satisfy internal customers projects, product teams, manufacturing, and procurement through the activities performed in the field of material analysis and testing, on time and with respect to the process control and batch acceptance requirements. Provide materials testing expertise to projects, product teams and Customers. Regular reporting to management on performance of the Materials Laboratory. Represent the Materials Laboratory in meetings with other departments and external customers. Grow the external work portfolio of the Materials Laboratory. This role will involve some travel for business and as such you must be able to travel accordingly. We are looking for candidates with the following skills and experience Degree in Materials Science and experience in the Space, Aerospace, Defence environment or highly regulated industry Proven Management and Supervisory experience a Management qualification would be an advantage Extensive experience working in a Chemical, Mechanical or Materials laboratory Good knowledge of materials and testing methods of materials polymers, composites and adhesives, or surface coatings, or metals or chemical analytical techniques A practitioner of and be able to interpret test data derived from one or more of the following methods of testing and assessing materials mechanical testing, thermal analysis, microscopy optical and SEM, XRF, FTIR, contamination analysis Appreciation of audits and continuous improvement Awareness of and ability to write and implement health safety, environment, COSHH processes and procedural documents Proficient in workplace organisational skills tools such as 5S, lean, problem solving Experience with external standards and auditing procedures would be desirable Ability to prioritise conflicting requirements Customer and results oriented Fluent in written and spoken English.
