The Akron Police Department, Summit County Sheriff's Office and Ohio State Highway Patrol will conduct free vehicle safety inspections Aug. 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot of the Akron Radio Center, 1795 W. Market St. The program allows citizens to have their vehicles inspected without fear of citations, according to city officials. Participants also will receive gift cards for Advance Auto Parts and O'Reilly Auto Parts stores.
West Side St. Paul group meeting on chemical tank issue tonight

The West Side Citizens Organization is sponsoring a community discussion about a proposal to install eight chemical tanks in an industrial area along the Mississippi River. The forum will take place at 6:30 p.m. tonight at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, 401 Concord Ave. WSCO has invited representatives of Hawkins Inc., the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and the community group Protect Our Riverfront Together.

The Falls Cares 5K Run/Walk and Kids Fun Run will take place July 25 starting at 8 a.m. at First Christian Church, 2253 Third St. The entry fee for the 5K is $25 in advance or $30 the day of the race and $15 or $20, respectively, for the Kids Fun Run. Discounts are available for families of three or more.

St. Paul: West Side group objects to chemical tank plans

A group of St. Paul's West Side residents are fighting a proposal from Hawkins Inc. to build eight chemical tanks, a tank containment structure, and truck and rail loading areas at 701 Barge Channel Road. The site, owned by the St. Paul Port Authority, is across from Pig's Eye Lake, between Concord Street and the Mississippi River, north of the St. Paul Police Department's impound lot.
