Dotsero bridge work has begun

The Colorado Department of Transportation and contractor partner, ABCO Contracting Company Inc., are conducting a bridge rehabilitation project on U.S. Highway 6 over the Union Pacific Railroad tracks in Dotsero. The relatively short work area is located between the westbound and eastbound Interstate 70 ramps near mile post 133.8. Construction activity will generally occur between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.

A small bridge over the Oradell Reservoir used by trains hauling millions of gallons of crude oil has deteriorated to the point that the rail company will soon replace the 86-year-old span's entire deck, according to a federal government inspection report. While federal officials have said the bridge is structurally sound, the report by the Federal Railroad Administration indicates the bridge is in worse condition than its owner, CSX Corp., acknowledged shortly after it was inspected in March.

A $25.1 million state highway project to refurbish and repaint the main span of the Sunshine Bridge is about 55 percent complete after more than 14 months of work and probably won't be finished until early 2016, highway officials said Friday. Michael Ricca, the state Department of Transportation and Development's project engineer for the work, added that all four lanes over the Mississippi River can't be reopened until then.
