Nitrogen has key role in estimating CO2 emissions from land use change
2013-04-19 22:59:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
ScienceDaily: A new global-scale modeling study that takes into account nitrogen -- a key nutrient for plants -- estimates that carbon emissions from human activities on land were 40 percent higher in the 1990s than in studies that did not account for nitrogen. Researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the University of Bristol Cabot Institute published their findings in the journal Global Change Biology. The findings will be a part of the upcoming Fifth Assessment Report from the Intergovernmental...
Moist Soil Sample Provides Precision, Better Accuracy in Estimating Potassium
2013-03-27 16:35:00| Corn & Soybean Digest
Test and Sidedress the Same Day | Rapid Field Moist Sample Analysis is Now Available and Paying Dividends Ignored for decades, moist sample analysis saves money and boosts yields. Soil labs and scientists alike abandoned field moist soil sampling decades ago. Common until the 1980s, field moist soil sampling was replaced with a faster and easier "dry and grind" procedure. read more

Estimating the Cost of Mortality Management
2013-01-15 16:09:00| National Hog Farmer
Research at Michigan State University estimated the costs of two animal composting systems and compared them to routine methods of managing mortalities. By Joe Vansickle, Senior Editor The practice of composting to manage on-farm swine mortalities has increased from 10.5% in 1994 to nearly 36% in 2006, according to data supplied by USDAs Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. Traditionally, the most popular method of composting has been the open static pile (OSP) in bins, piles or windrows, managed by primary, secondary and curing stages. More recently, in-vessel (IV) systems have become increasingly used. The most popular system is rotating drums. read more
