The Justice Department said Friday a former salesman at a Los Angeles-area Ford dealership and another man were charged with odometer tampering. Jeffrey Levy, 62, and Shamai Salpeter, 65, both of Woodland Hills, Calif., were charged in separate criminal informations with conspiracy to commit odometer tampering.

U.S. regulators has charged 34 companies, corporate executives and major shareholders in a first-of-its-kind sweep into violations of federal laws that require insiders to disclose promptly their stock holdings and trades. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission said that the defendants included well-known companies such as Starwood Hotel & Resorts Worldwide Inc., Jones Lang LaSalle Inc., Royal Bank of Scotland and Sankaty Advisors L.L.C., a unit of the private equity firm Bain Capital.

Chesapeake Energy to face racketeering charges in Michigan trial

Natural gas and oil producer Chesapeake Energy Corp must face trial on charges of felony racketeering and using false pretenses related to its land-leasing practices, a state judge has ruled. Cheboygan District Court Judge Maria Barton ruled on Monday that Oklahoma-based Chesapeake go to trial on one charge of racketeering and 20 counts of using false pretenses to allegedly defraud private landowners in the state during an oil and gas leasing boom in 2010.

Google to pay USD 19 mln to settle in-app charges complaint

(Telecompaper) Google has agreed to settle a Federal Trade Commission complaint alleging that it unfairly billed consumers for millions of dollars in unauthorised charges incurred by children using mobile apps downloaded from the Google Play app store for use on Android mobile devices. Under the terms of the settlement, Google will provide full refunds, with a minimum payment of USD 19 million, to consumers who were charged for kids' purchases without authorisation of the account holder. Google has also agreed to modify its billing practices to ensure it obtains express, informed consent from consumers before charging them for items sold in mobile apps.
