Camagey Marks Sugar Sector Worker\'s Day

Sibanic, Camaguey, Oct 13. Members of the National Union of Sugar Industry Workers (SNTA) marked today the Sugar Sector Worker\'s Day at Siboney mill, the first cane processing factory in Cuba that met its production plan last year's milling season.

Sugar industry unwilling to commence crushing on time

The country's sugar industry is unwilling to commence sugarcane crushing on time if the federal government continues to interfere in fixation of sugar prices far below sugarcane prices being fixed by the provincial governments, well informed sources in Ministry of Industries and Production told Business Recorder. Sugarcane crushing starts in November each year and provincial governments, in consultation with the federal government, notify and determine the minimum purchase price for sugarcane pursuant to Section 16 of the 1950 Act.

Sugar Cane Impasse Stands

On Thursday the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association met with representative of Belize Sugar Industry/American Sugar Refinery to finalize the new sugar-cane purchase agreement. That agreement has been delayed because the parties have been unable to agree to core facets of it. Of course, perhaps the most glaring issue of contention is the quantum of payment for bagasse, and it was hoped that on Thursday there would be some silver lining in the dark clouds which have hovered over the industry since last year. But it didn\'t happen. There was no agreement. According to Ortega, almost all their counter-proposals were rejected, and Thursday was not a good day.

Sugar mill defaults on bank loans, others may follow

MUMBAI (Reuters) - Plunging sugar prices have forced at least one sugar mill to default on bank loans and could drive others to do the same, the latest sign of the heavy toll a four-year-old supply glut in the country is taking on producers of the sweetener.
