Google to Search for the Meaning of Health
2014-07-26 03:37:57| TechNewsWorld
Google is seeking 175 volunteers from whom it will collect bodily samples in an effort to create their biochemical fingerprints and establish the baseline for a healthy body. The Baseline study, to be run by Google X labs, will seek to connect traditional clinical observations of health, such as diet -- or habits, such as smoking -- with molecular-level changes.

EC may revisit Google search settlement - report
2014-07-23 08:31:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) The European Commission may revisit ts settlement with Google over competition allegations in the search market after a growing number of complaints from Google rivals and customers about the deal. People familiar with the matter told the Financial Times that the EC competition authorities will take a decision in September after they complete a consultation with the market on the proposed settlement. EU competition commissioner Joaquin Almunia previously expressed confidence that the package addressed the main antitrust concerns, in spite of heavy criticism from some fellow EU commissioners and French and German ministers. However, he also made clear that he would take account of any new arguments made by rivals, who recently received letters explaining how their complaints might be rejected. According to the report, the EC is now reassessing two elements of the draft settlement: whether more prominent visibility for rival links is enough to remedy the diversion of traffic to Google services, and the auction mechanism where rivals bid for links alongside Google's specialised search results. Another issue is whether to expand the scope of the investigation to include complaints made against Google services such as YouTube, which may be partly related to Google's search practices.

Google starts removing personal data from search results
2014-06-26 13:19:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Google said it has begun to remove results from its search engine under the EU's 'right to be forgotten', following a European Court of Justice ruling in May that individuals can request that search engine to remove results of searches for their names. The court decided that Google had to weigh the right to privacy against public interest in the data. Google has updated its technical infrastructure to implement the removals. The first e-mails informing people that the requested link was being blocked are being sent on 26 June. Google has only processed a small part of the over 41,000 requests received through a web form it published in response to the ruling. Google said "This is a new process for us. Each request has to be assessed individually, and we're working as quickly as possible to get through the queue. We'll continue to work with data protection authorities and others as we implement this ruling."
