Maple Leaf Foods reported a profit on an adjusted basis after six quarters due to lower operating costs as the Canadian meat processor worked through its plan to upgrade its plants. Maple Leaf, whose brands include Schneiders meat, is nearing the end of a multi-year program to replace old plants with modern facilities as it seeks to boost profits and better compete with U.S. rivals.

Shaw Communications reports smaller Q2 profit as reorganization effort continues

Shaw Communications Inc. says ongoing efforts to improve its customer care operations cut into its profit in the second quarter. The Calgary-based telecom and media company says it recorded $38 million of expenses related to severance and employee-related costs for about 1,600 affected employees.

George Weston Ltd. saw net profits decline in the fourth quarter as the maker of bakery products and parent company of Loblaw took a number of sizable charges against earnings. Sales in the quarter, which at 13 weeks was one week longer than the comparable 2013 period, rose more than 48 per cent to $11.73 billion from $7.9 billion, largely as the result of the Shoppers Drug Mart acquisition.
