Ericsson sues Apple for patent infringement

2015-02-27 08:44:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Ericsson has filed patent infringement complaints against Apple at the International Trade Commission and a court in the US. The two complaints allege that Apple's iPhones and iPads infringe 41 patents held by Ericsson, as Applle is operating without a licence to the technologysince last month. The patents include standard-essential patents related to the 2G and LTE standards as well as other patents that are critical to features and functionality of Apple devices, such as the design of semiconductor components, user interface software, location services and applications, as well as the iOS operating system. Ericsson said it seeks exclusion orders in the ITC proceedings and damages and injunctions in the District Court action. Apple's global licence agreement for Ericsson's mobile technology expired last month, and Apple has declined to take a new licence offered on FRAND terms, Ericsson said, adding that it made several attempts to find a fair solution.

Ericsson to demo multimode, multipoint 5G connectivity

2015-02-25 14:18:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Ericsson will show new advances in 5G technology at the Mobile World Congress. Following a speed test where the Ericsson 5G radio test bed topped 5 Gbps throughput, the company will demonstrate 5G-LTE Dual Connectivity and 5G Multipoint Connectivity in Barcelona. The latest 5G radio test bed innovations focus on the interactions between mobile devices and the radio access network, both indoors and outside. With 5G-LTE Dual Connectivity, the 5G mobile device moves between LTE and 5G radio access coverage areas, establishing simultaneous connections with both networks before seamlessly handing over. This will enable 5G networks to provide multi-standard and multi-band support in both devices and radio access. The 5G Multipoint Connectivity shows a 5G mobile device connecting to two 5G base stations simultaneously, improving bit rate performance through multiple downlink streams, as well as signal strength and resilience. This will be key to supporting multi-layer networks consisting of both macro and small cell coverage, Ericsson said. The company's demonstrations at MWC will feature both 5G devices and 5G radio base stations operating in the high frequency 15 GHz band.

Ericsson shrinks network footprint with new Radio System

2015-02-19 14:23:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Ericsson has unveiled a new radio network architecture, aimed at increasing site flexibility for quicker network roll-out and expansion. The new Ericsson Radio System will be presented in March at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, and Ericsson said it expects the first networks using the system to be deployed in Q3. Softbank Mobile is among the operators adopting the system. The modular radio system looks to resolve problems with expanding coverage in densely populated and congested areas. Operators struggling with site acquisition challenges can use wall space in existing sites and add five times the capacity to towers, Ericsson said. The company claims the new radio system can deliver three times the capacity density with a 50 percent improvement in energy efficiency, while also reducing the total cost of ownership by 20 percent. In addition to smaller size and weight, the new base stations are backward-compatible with Ericsson's existing RBS 6000 portfolio. Based on a rail system, featuring one-bolt installation, the base unit can adapt to any site with zero floor footprint. The Ericsson Radio System incorporates a range of new products including macro and small cells, antenna systems, IP transport, microwave nodes, rails and other site equipment. The system comes with twice-yearly network software updates.
