Huawei, Etisalat showcase 5G mobile broadband at Gitex

(Telecompaper) Huawei and Etisalat have jointly showcased 5G mobile broadband services at Gitex Technology Week in Dubai from 12-16 October. This is the first time 5G technology has been presented in the region. The demonstration showcased an 115 Gbps data transmission rate capability, which is faster than current mobile networks. An increase of capability will support the connection requirements for the Internet of Things, 4D film, MirrorSys and Vehicular Telematics.

Etisalat mulls sale of Zantel - report

(Telecompaper) UAE-based operator Etisalat is exploring a sale of its stake in Tanzanian operator Zantel, Bloomberg reported citing people with knowledge of the situation. Deutsche Bank is working with Etisalat on the sale of its 65 percent stake in Zantel. Zantel, Tanzania's largest ISP has attracted interest from Vodacom Group and may also attract Millicom International as a suitor, the report said. Zantel had sales of about USD 85 million in 2013, according to an Etisalat document published in May. The unit was in default for non-payment of a USD 96 million bank facility, with the lender saying it may take enforcement action against Zantel unless a payment is made, according to the document.

(Telecompaper) Etisalat Nigeria has announced the sale of 2,136 of its towers to IHS Holding (IHS). The transaction, the first by a major GSM operator in Nigeria, is expected to close later this year. The partnership with IHS is designed to promote network sharing, ensure higher quality, sustain reliable mobile services, lower overall costs and also promote a cleaner environment through reduced diesel usage and increased investments in alternative energy solutions. Over the past 18 months, IHS has installed a large number of alternative energy sites in Nigeria. These investments in addition to further investments in its Network Operations Centre (NOC) mean that uptimes of over 99 percent are achieved on its owned sites. Under the terms of the transaction, IHS has committed to investing a further USD 100 million in the towers acquired, on advanced generators, efficient batteries and alternative energy solutions to reduce diesel consumption and improve efficiency of grid use. Upon the conclusion of this transaction, IHS will own and manage over 6,540 towers in Nigeria. IHS will market services on the towers promoting tower sharing and colocation to help drive network improvements.
