Vodacom South Africa in talks to buy Vumatel and Dark Fibre Africa - report

(Telecompaper) Vodacom South Africa is in discussions with Remgro to acquire Community Investment Ventures Holdings (CIVH), which owns Vumatel and Dark Fibre Africa (DFA), reports MyBroadband citing sources. Remgro said it does not comment on speculation. CIVH acquired 34.9 percent of Vumatel for an undisclosed amount in June 2018 and the remaining 65.1 percent in May 2019.

Vodacom Group appoints Morathi as CFO from November

(Telecompaper) Vodacom Group has announced the appointment of Raisibe Morathi as its new group chief financial officer effective 01 November, when she will also join the group board. Vodacom said Raisibe's appointment underscores the company's  commitment to driving diversity across the workplace. Raisibe joins Vodacom from Nedbank Group, where she was group chief finance officer since 2009.

Vodacom Group revenue up 5.6% in Q1 on growth in South Africa

(Telecompaper) Vodacom Group revenue increased by 5.6 percent to ZAR 22.73 billion in the first quarter to 30 June. The mobile operator said it saw strong growth in South Africa as customer demand rose during the lockdown, but international operations were hit by lower economic activity because of Covid-19. Service revenue climbed 7.6 percent to ZAR 18.76 billion. The temporary spectrum assignment in South Africa allowed Vodacom to fast-track the launch of the country's first mobile 5G network and a fixed 5G commercial service.

Vodacom partners AliPay to create new payments app

(Telecompaper) South African operator Vodacom announced a technology partnership with Alipay to bring inclusive mobile payment services to consumers and merchants. The app will make it easier for customers to manage their life and business through a smartphone, the operator said.

Alphabet's Loon and Vodacom tie up to increase rural internet access in Mozambique

(Telecompaper) Alphabet's Loon and Vodacom Group have agreed to use Loon's balloon-powered internet service to expand the Vodacom network in Mozambique. Vodacom will provide service to un-served and under-served parts of the country with a network of floating cell phone towers that operate 20 kilometres above Earth. Vodacom will expand mobile network access to Cabo Delgado and Niassa provinces, two regions that have proven hard to cover in the past because of challenging geography and low population density.
