(Telecompaper) Vodacom Group reported a 2.3 percent increase in its revenue for the six months to September to ZAR 37.54 billion. Sales were buoyed by equipment revenue, which contributed 17.1 percent of group revenue compared to 16.7 percent a year ago. Active customers grew by 13.3 percent year-on-year to 61 million at 30 September. Headline EPS declined 5.5 percent to ZAR 4.15, mainly the result of termination rate cuts in South Africa, as well as increased depreciation as a result of accelerated capital investments. EBITDA declined 1.7 percent to ZAR 12.99 billion, and the EBITDA margin contracted 1.4 percent points to 34.6 percent. Capital expenditure rose 21.3 percent from a year ago to ZAR 5.88 billion. The company said it expects conditions to remain challenging in the short-term, particularly in South Africa where the continued impact of lower mobile termination rates, constrained consumer spend, and intense competitive pressure are all factors. In the international markets, particularly Tanzania and the DRC, continued pricing pressure is also likely to have an impact. However, Vodacom said positive trends in the adoption of smart devices and data usage will help to offset this, as will the ongoing focus on reducing operating expenditure.

(Telecompaper) The South African government is thinking of selling its minority stake in Vodacom, Bloomberg reported, citing cources with knowledge of the matter. Vodafone has a 65 percent stake in Vodacom and could be a possible buyer for the new shares, the sources said. Vodafone owns 40 percent of Kenya's Safaricom and has branded businesses in Egypt and Ghana. The South African government's 13.9 percent stake in Vodacom is valued at about ZAR 25.5 billion. The state is exploring a sale of the unit as it seeks funds to rescue utility Eskom, the people with knowledge of the matter said.

Vodacom S Africa launches low-cost tablet

(Telecompaper) Vodacom has announced the launch of the first 3G tablet designed specifically for the South African market, IT News Africa reported. Called the Vodacom Smart Tab 3G, the 7 inch tablet runs the latest Android 4.4 KitKat operating system and is available on contract for ZAR 59 per month, an amount which includes 1GB of data each month. The Smart Tab 3G, which weighs 275g, features a 7 inch 960x540 TFT capacitive touch screen display, a 2 megapixel rear-facing camera for pictures and video, a 0.3 megapixel front-facing camera for video calls and selfies, 4GB of memory expandable to 32GB via micro-SD card, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Zulu language support. In addition to the ZAR 59 per month 24 month contract, the Smart Tab 3G is also available on a prepaid basis for ZAR 999. The prepaid device comes with 100 MB of data each month for the first three months. The Smart Tab 3G is the second Vodacom branded device to be launched in South Africa. In August Vodacom launched the entry level smartphone called the Vodacom Smart Kicka. In the first two months since launch almost a quarter of a million of these devices were sold. Vodacom plans to introduce another own-branded device before the end of the year.

Vodacom appoints Cuba as new strategy chief

(Telecompaper) African mobile operator Vodacom has announced the appointment of Yolanda Cuba, an independent non-executive director, as its new chief officer for strategy and business development with effect from 1 November. Vodacom said Cuba would become a member of the group executive, after stepping down from the board on 31 October. Cuba is a member of Vodacom's audit, risk and compliance committee. Her background includes a role as executive director for strategy and business support at South African Breweries (SAB). Before joining SAB, she was one of South Africa's youngest CEOs when she took the helm of Mvelaphanda Group in 2007. Neil Gough currently holds the position of chief officer of strategy development, having joined Vodacom in August 2011, after being with Vodafone Group since 2003.
