(Telecompaper) The worldwide smartphone market reached a record 295.3 million shipments in the second quarter, up 23.1 percent on the second quarter of 2012 and up 2.6 percent on a very strong first quarter, according to IDC. Emerging markets supported by local vendors are continuing to be the main catalyst for smartphone sales. A broad range of Chinese OEMs more than outpaced the market in the second quarter, led by Huawei, which nearly doubled its shipments in a year. Samsung shipped 74.3 million smartphones in the period for a 25.2 percent market share, down on 77.3 million units and a 32.3 percent share in the second quarter of 2013. Apple sold 35.1 million smartphones for an 11.9 percent share in the second quarter, compared to a 31.2 million units sold and a 13 percent share in the year-earlier period. Huawei shipped 20.3 million smartphones for a 6.9 percent market share in the second quarter, versus 10.4 million units and a 4.3 percent share a year earlier. Lenovo sold 15.8 million smartphones worldwide for a 5.4 percent market share, compared to 11.4 million phones sold and a 4.7 percent share in the second quarter of last year. LG shipped 14.5 million smartphones for a 4.9 percent share in the second quarter, up on 12.1 million units and a 5 percent share a year ago. IDC expects the global smartphone market to pass 300 million units in the third quarter.

Huawei H1 smartphone shipments up 62% in over 34 mln units

2014-07-29 09:03:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Huawei reported its first-half smartphone shipments up 62 percent year-on-year to 34.27 million units. The company's consumer division shipped in total 64.21 million devices in the six months. The growth was driven by new flagship models such as the Mate 2 4G and Ascend P7, Huawei said. The P7, which features LTE and an 8-megapixel front camera, sold nearly 2 million units less than two months after its launch. Sales were helped by the company's increased marketing, including sponsorship of a number of well-known football clubs in Europe. The company achieved a market share of 3 percent in Germany and Spain and aims to grow this to 5 percent soon. In Q2 alone, Huawei shipped 20.56 million smartphones to markets in Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa, an increase of 85 percent compared to last year. Shipments grew 550 percent in the Middle East and Africa, 275 percent in Latin America, 180 percent in Asia-Pacific and 120 percent in Europe.
