New York's Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) has awarded a $42m contract to Italian company Ansaldo Signalling and Transportation Systems (Ansaldo STS) to design and develop a new signalling system using computer-based train control.
LIRR scoot trains planned for the North Fork on hold

Plans for so-called scoot trains, which were once envisioned as a way of increasing Long Island Rail Road service to the North Fork, have been put on hold after the Metropolitan Transportation Authority learned the trains are incompatible with the LIRR's network. The MTA had authorized spending more than $37 million to purchase the smaller "diesel multiple units," which are lighter, have smaller engines and are more cost-effective to operate than existing LIRR trains.

As the city keeps digging out from Saturday's massive snowstorm, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority says full Long Island Rail Road service is up and running with scattered delays for Tuesday's morning rush. Mayor Bill de Blasio has also issued a travel advisory through Friday because of the potential for black ice that can cause slick conditions on city streets.
