Allen Cappelli, whose six-year term is due to end in June, is the only Staten Islander on the board of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. By a 10-1 vote a few months ago, members of the board at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority approved the latest round of toll hikes on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.

Conyers, Georgia-based Pratt Industries has announced it will lead a coalition of government, private enterprise, trade associations and nonprofits to increase recycling rates and environmental awareness among students and teachers in dozens of New York City schools. Pratt chairman Anthony Pratt was joined by local leaders including Staten Island Borough President James S. Oddo in releasing details of the program, designed to introduce a detailed antilittering, pro-recycling curriculum to schools on Staten Island.

One of two plans for tolls would push the basic toll on the bridge to $16, if you pay cash. But E-ZPass users only pay $10.66 round-trip and Staten Island residents get discounts and rebates that allow them to pay just $5.50 to cross and return - about the same as riding the subway.
