UK MPs call for roaming, fines to improve mobile coverage

2016-10-31 09:11:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) A group of UK MPs has published a report calling on the government to do more to end mobile 'not spots' in the country. Their report calls for measures such as fines for operators not meeting coverage targets and national roaming to improve coverage for end-users. The report by the 'British Infrastructure Group' of MPs found that a third of mobile users, or 17 million people, across the UK report poor or no reception at home, while as many as 28 percent of rural spots in the country also lack coverage. The MPs want the government to request information from mobile operators by December on what they are doing to ensure a promise that the UK has at least 90 percent geographic voice coverage by 2017.

Ofcom fines Vodafone GBP 4.6 mln after billing problems

2016-10-26 09:04:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Ofcom said Vodafone must pay a total of GBP 4.62 million for breaching consumer protection rules in a "serious and sustained" manner. The UK regulator said the imposition follows the completion of two investigations, resulting in two penalties. In the first investigation, Ofcom found that Vodafone took money from pay-as-you go customers, without providing a service in return. This occurred when the operator moved customers to a new billing service. In the second investigation, Ofcom found flaws in Vodafone's complaints handling procedure, including mis-selling and inaccurate billing.
