Last week, United States supermarket chain Jewel-Osco removed from its shelves its ironically titled "Essential Everyday 100% Parmesan Cheese", following a Bloomberg News investigation. Reporter Lydia Mulvany revealed the UN Food and Drug Administration discovered evidence Pennsylvania-based Castle Cheese Inc. was doctoring its "100 percent real" parmesan with fillers such as wood pulp, and distributing it to some of the country's largest grocery chains.

U.S. supermarket chain Jewel-Osco removed all of its Essential Everyday 100% Parmesan Cheese from shelves amid concerns about the use of cellulose, a food additive made from wood. The move follows a Bloomberg News investigation published Feb. 16 that revealed a canister of the grated cheese tested by an independent laboratory contained 8.8 percent cellulose.

A test by Bloomberg showed Jewel-Osco's brand had 8.8-percent cellulose, Walmart's Good Value had 7.8-percent, and Kraft had 3.8-percent. But the FDA says its tests showed some brands like Market Pantry, Always Save, and Best Choice had no parmesan at all, but a mix of cheaper cheese and cellulose.
