NTSB updates investigation into sinking of cargo ship.

In its continuing investigation of the sinking of the cargo ship El Faro in the Atlantic Ocean near the Bahamas, NTSB has found that on February 13, 2015, El Faro successfully completed the American Bureau of Shipping class and statutory surveys. Annual inspection of El Faro, required by the USCG, was completed by qualified USCG inspectors in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on March 6, 2015. Vessel’s terminal manager reported that El Faro met stability criteria when it left Jacksonville.

Shipments of commodities that are toxic if inhaled will not be accepted by Norfolk Southern rail operations after Dec. 1, and Amtrak service on the freight railroads lines, including those running through Altoona, will end Dec. 31, the railroad announced Tuesday. Norfolk Southern Corp. said in a release its rail operations will no longer accept shipments of "Poisonous-Inhalation-Hazard commodities" effective Dec. 1, and those already in transit will be delivered by Dec. 31 to meet federal law.
