Will your alcohol consumption help or hinder you from reaching 90? - International Scientific Forum on Alcohol Research Critique 237
2020-03-02 11:51:00| Daily beverage news and comment - from just-drinks.com
An interesting and well-done study from a cohort of ageing men in the Netherlands that evaluated how alcohol consumption data collected at 68-to-70 years old related to the risk that the individual would survive to age 90.

Electronicselectrical engineer to conduct research in the field of freespace optical communication
2020-02-28 11:12:05| Space-careers.com Jobs RSS
Launch your mission at DLR DLR is the research centre for aeronautics and space and the Federal Republic of Germanys space agency. Around 8,700 employees are researching a unique variety of topics in aeronautics, space flight, energy, transport, security and digitisation. Their missions range from basic research to developing innovative applications and the products of tomorrow. Toplevel research needs excellent minds at all levels especially even more female ones who will reach their full potential in an inspiring environment. Start your mission with us. For the DLR Institute of Communications and Navigation in Oberpfaffenhofen, near Munich we are looking for an Electronics engineer, electrical engineer or similar to conduct research in the field of freespace optical communications, especially for downlinks of small satellites in the OSIRIS programme. Your mission Over the last few years, our Satellite Networks Division has been playing a leading role in Europe in the study and development of new system concepts, transmission methods, protocols and applications for satellite communications. We continually demonstrate this through our active participation in national missions in the field of satellite communications and by defining new procedures and technologies in this area. A key research area of the department is freespace optical communications used for intersatellite links, but also increasingly used for links within the atmosphere aircraft, drones and satelliteground links. The successful applicant will be employed as an addition to our Optical Communications Systems team. The team is involved in areas such as developing innovative optical communication terminals for aircraft and other airborne carriers, developing experimental laser communication systems for small satellites OSIRIS programme and implementing appropriate measurement and demonstration campaigns. With increasing sensor capacities of modern earth observation satellites, there is a growing need for data transmission systems that can provide a high data rate. The combination of a high data transfer rate, low weight, low power consumption and a small form factor is the highest priority, particularly for small satellites. Miniaturised laser transmitter terminals are suitable for direct optical downlinks as they have antenna diameters of a few centimetres and thus a very small, lightweight design. This transmission technology is also not subject to any frequency allocation restrictions. The OSIRIS system is used on two small satellites BiROS Berlin InfraRed Optical System from DLR and Flying Laptop from the University of Stuttgart. Systems for use on a nanosatellite Cubesat and for an application at the International Space Station ISS are currently in development. The position will reflect the context of these new developments. Data is received by the German Aerospace Centers ground control in Oberpfaffenhofen, consisting of a permanently installed optical ground control OGSOP for scientific experiments and measurements and a transportable optical ground control TOGS for receiving data. Design and implementation of ambitious research projects in the field of freespace optical communication, especially for downlinks of small satellites in the OSIRIS programme Develop electronics, including automated and stable power supplies, data transmission andor optical beam control for satellite payloads, so that functionality of these systems is constantly guaranteed, even during spacerelated failures. Develop highspeed electronics for data transfer andor optical applications, in particular, for stable data reception of atmosphericallydisturbed optical signals with high data rates of up to 10 gigabits per second, so that the system also functions properly under reallife operating conditions. Integration and testing of space payload subsystems, including stability testing and systems analysis, to rule out potential system instability due to parameter changes caused by ageing and wear and tear in extreme space conditions. Programme embedded hardware for space applications, e.g. in CC, for optical beam control or other control tasks Develop an optimised hardwaresoftware implementation for cost and weight, which ensures that the system interacts with the optical ground controls with high performance levels and flexibility for data and signal processing and also coding and decoding. General literature reviews, preparation and evaluation in the field of freespace optical communication. Your qualifications University degree in electronics, electrical engineering or similar discipline Masters Basic knowledge of space technology Sound knowledge and practical experience in designing, developing and testing electronic circuits for space applications, in particular, analogue and mixedsignal Sound knowledge of designing and simulating electrical circuits with typical software, such as EAGLE, Altium Designer, Cadence Allgero or OrCAD Good knowledge of highspeed PCB design Basic knowledge of CC in the design and programming of embedded hardware Your takeoff Are you looking forward to meeting an employer who appreciates your commitment and encourages you via a wide range of qualification and further training options? Our unique working environment offers you space to grow and an unrivalled infrastructure within which to complete your mission. Compatibility of work, family and private life as well as equal opportunities for persons of all genders are important parts of our HR policy. Candidates with severe disabilities will be appointed preferentially if appropriately qualified. Christopher Schmidt will be happy to answer any technical questions over the phone 49 8153 283091. More information about this position code 45772 and about the application process can be found at www.DLR.dedlrjobs40214
